Cop admits to sex crimes - gets slapped on wrist

http://www.sfgate.com/news/crime/article/Cop-pleads-guilty-to-having-sex-on-duty-5267478.php

COLVILLE, Wash. (AP) — A Colville police officer who had sex while on duty with several women has pleaded guilty to multiple crimes.

The state Attorney General's Office says 45-year-old Rex Newport pleaded guilty Tuesday to five criminal counts, including unlawful imprisonment and sexual misconduct.

The attorney general's office says Newport faces a sentence of between 22 and 29 months when he is sentenced in April.

According to court documents, Newport last March showed up at a Colville woman's apartment, handcuffed her and had sex without her consent. Documents say two other women told investigators that Newport had pulled them over on suspicion of driving while drunk, then had sex with them in secluded areas.

Had sex? Had sex while on duty? How about "having sex" without her consent. The very definition of rape? Instead he gets 22 to 29 months.

Referring to rape as sex is one way our patriarchal culture minimizes and normalizes rape.

I sent a howler to my local teevee news station one morning because they refused to use the word rape. It was during the Sandusky story. They kept saying that Jerry had sex with underage boys. I was livid and sent off an email about it. It is infuriating.

it rape because he's not being charged with rape.My guess is that prosecutors allowed him to plead down to sexual misconduct and let a serial rapist off with a slap on the wrist.

According to charging papers, the first woman to come forward reported being sexually assaulted by Newport at her apartment in Colville in March 2013. The woman reported he handcuffed her and then later had sexual intercourse with her. The woman went to the hospital for a sexual assault examination and reported the incident to the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).

According to court documents, after the first woman reported her encounter with Newport, several other women reported to the SCSO that Newport had also made sexual advances toward them while on duty. The SCSO included documentation of four other women who were targeted in documents filed with the court.

Newport pleaded guilty to:
Residential Burglary;
Unlawful Imprisonment with sexual motivation, which is a class C felony requiring sex offender registration for 10 years;
Custodial Sexual Misconduct in the first degree, which is a class C felony requiring sex offender registration for 10 years;
Making a False or Misleading Statement to a Public Servant; and
Official Misconduct.

Terms of his Alford plea is that he can serve these multiple felonies concurrently as opposed to consecutively.
