George W. Bushs former chief strategist minced no words in criticizing a pending bill in Arizona that, if signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer, would allow for Jim Crow-style discrimination against homosexuals on the part of businesses.
Matthew Dowd was asked on ABCs This Week to predict whether Brewer, a Republican, would sign the anti-gay legislation passed by the Republican-controlled Arizona legislature last week into law. The bill would allow business owners to use their religious beliefs as a rationale to refuse service for gay and lesbian customers.
I think, in the end, Gov. Brewer is probably going to veto this because it seems like an easy veto for her to do because of everything thats going in the business economy there, Dowd responded.
This is one of those problems when people use religion as a way to sort of enforce discriminatory practices, he continued. People used religion back in the 1860s when they defended slavery. They used religion to defend slavery.
Weve used religion to go to war. People have criticized Islam because they use religion to fight people and kill people. This is the problem with that bill.
