I often forget that San Francisco has a real hero in Congress.

I am watching a CNN documentary on the Jonestown Massacre and am reminded that Congresswoman Jackie Speier, who represents that western side of San Francisco was shot five times and left for dead on a runway in Guyana (as an aide for Congressman Leo Ryan) for investigating the infamous cult. I am forever in awe at her strength.

Jackie Speier on Abortion, Planned Parenthood, Halliburton, etc - February 2011 - video

Uploaded on Feb 18, 2011

During a U.S. House debate (seen on C-SPAN) on 2011 Federal Spending, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) comments on abortion, in response to comments made by Rep. Christopher Smith (R-NJ). Included in her comments, "I had a procedure at 17 weeks pregnant with a child...that procedure is a procedure that I endured. I lost a baby. But for you to stand on this floor and to suggest, as you have, that somehow this is a procedure that is either welcomed or done cavalierly or done without any thought is preposterous." ...

"Speier was shot five times and waited 22 hours before help arrived.[14] That same day, over 900 of the remaining members of the Peoples Temple died in Jonestown and Georgetown."

People Jones took his people to Guyana, Mayor Moscone wound up on their hit list (that is why they first put metal detectors in our City Hall). And two People's Temple members who volunteered for Harvey Milk were eventually found dead in their homes.

It took a lot of courage to face down this truly insane & heavily armed cult of crazies.....and that's putting it lightly! She is to be greatly commended for her bravery. Thank you, Jackie.

I once had breakfast with an elderly lady who's been a part of the City's progressive movement for decades, and ask her who she thought was our best mayor. Her answer without hesitation was Dianne Feinstein because, her words, "she kept the city together when Milk and Moscone were killed."
