Breaking: Chihuahuas are running wild in Phoenix.

February 17, 2014 (PHOENIX, Arizona) (WLS) -- Chihuahuas are apparently overrunning Maryvale, a Phoenix neighborhood, where animal control officers report stray dogs.

Officials said foreclosures and undocumented workers being forced away led to a large number of small dogs running wild. Animal control workers said they've had thousands of calls about stray Chihuahuas.

"If at all possible, if you see a stray, if you can safely contain him in your yard and then call us, that makes a big difference. Because what's happening is people are calling saying, 'hey I see a stray' by the time we get there, it's long gone," Melissa Gable, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, said.
According to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, the small dogs are one of the most popular breeds up for adoption at Phoenix shelters.

But seriously, poor little things! How could someone just leave their tiny little dog behind? My dogs and I are joined at the hip. I couldn't leave them behind, no matter what.

I like the pic in your sig - is that your snow kitty?

4. In the animal shelters in SoCal, these dogs are 50% of the population, another 40% are pit mixes...

and there are a few other type of dogs.

This breakdown says so much about OUR population. Blame Taco Bell and Paris Hilton maybe... And the drug gangs and others for breeding so many pits, way out of proportion to their previous levels...

Very sad, so many puppys that will never make it out of the shelter...Glad I got my Charlie there last year but I wished then I could take 'em all home with me!!!

7. They're shipping lots of them up to WA because our spay-neuter campaigns work well enough

to keep numbers down. We have a surprising number of Chihuahuas at the pound here now. Unfortunately, because not everyone is looking for such a small dog.

I looked for a little dog for months, and finally got a minipin/yorkie rescue about 10 years old. Chihuahuas are very popular in shelters here and don't stay in the shelter long. Maybe y'all should ship your Chihuahuas to Oregon? Multnomah County shelters don't kill unless it's unavoidable - i.e. bad behavioral issues or illness.

12. Most of our Chihuahuas are coming from CA -- which is probably sending them to Oregon, too.

And California, in turn, imports strays from Mexico, which doesn't have as much in the way of spay and neuter programs.

Our neighbor has a darling little Chi that was found as a stray most likely from circumstances like these. He has always been a very sweet, loving dog; so he had obviously been someone's well-loved pet.

"Safely contain them in your yard?"

I would think that if you put out a bowl of water and some food, that would be the happiest little critter around.
