will never look suspicious to you. Even if I have a black hoodie, a pair of jeans and white sneakers on...in fact, that is what I wore yesterday...I still will never look suspicious. No matter how much the hoodie covers my face or how baggie my jeans are, I will never look out of place to you. I will never watch a taxi cab pass me by to pick someone else up. I will never witness someone clutch their purse tightly against their body as they walk by me. I won't have to worry about a police car following me for two miles, so they can "run my plates." I will never have to pay before I eat. And I certainly will never get "stopped and frisked." I will never look suspicious to you, because of one thing and one thing only. The color of my skin. I am white.
I was born white. It was the card I was dealt. No choice in the matter. Just the card handed out by the dealer. I have lived my whole life privileged. Privileged to be born without a glass ceiling. Privileged to grow up in the richest country in the world. Privileged to never look suspicious. I have no guilt for the color of my skin or the privilege that I have. Remember, it was just the next card that came out of the deck. But, I have choices. I got choices on how I play the hand I was dealt. I got a lot of options. The ball is in my court.

(37,573 posts)Once I was walking to church across some parking lot. Half a block away a cop was turning right, but then suddenly he went straight ahead and circiled the block around me.
Another night a cop followed me for about a mile before finally pulling me over half a block from my house for failing to signal for a turn.
Another night a cop tail-gated me through a construction zone (hoping to give me a DOUBLE ticket) before pulling me over when the construction zone ended.
I even got "stopped and frisked" for the huge crime of "failure to wear a seatbelt".
I drive a bicycle. I am constantly a suspect for carrying a backpack, even at places where I shop regularly.
But that's okay, I suppose. If nothing ever happened to this twenty year old (I am guessing) then nothing ever happens to ANY white person.

(33,688 posts)Some friends of mine and I were tossing a Frisbee around in a public park two blocks from my home in a Minneapolis suburb on a summer weekday. A cop came by and told us to "get the fuck out of the park." Our crime? No one had any weed or beer, just sodas. But we all committed the unpardonable offense of having shoulder-length hair. In 1977. And we were all white, each and every one of us.
Cops, as a general rule, are drawn from the worst elements of society that don't or can't join the Mob.

(30,151 posts)we stopped at a local store for some chips and right when I went to open the door, some scraggly looking punk swung it open walking outside full swing where I caught it and shot him a look when he walked by.
Looked like a little meth head and we locked eyes for one half second where he got the "just keep walking bitch" look.
Yeah, 20 something white guy was suspicious as was his illegal truck with no tags...

(475 posts)I was at my girlfriend's house this past summer and it was like...oh, 9 o'clock at night or so. We went out to my car because we were going to get something to eat and before we drove off we sat in the car and talked for a few minutes. As we were getting in the car, a cop drives by and slows way down as he passes my car and shines a light right into my car and into our faces. I honestly thought he was going to stop and get out. And as should be noted, my preferred method of dress is a black hat, black shorts or pants and a black shirt. Suspicious? Well, apparently.
