French Police Say They Have Cornered Suspect in School Shooting
The man was identified in French media reports as Mohammed Merah, a French national of Algerian descent. Interior Minister Claude Guéant, speaking at the site, said the man told negotiators that he belonged to Al Qaeda and that the attacks were meant to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and to protest French military deployments abroad.

(10,164 posts)Kind of surprising...I guess. But I don't want to be a hypocrite here: when I first heard of these shootings, my first thought was that it was a radical Islamist (and I'd bet I'm in the extreme majority, too). Can't say I'm proud of that, but I have to be honest.

(20,819 posts)Is that supposed to be some kind of dog-whistle code for "of course it's a Muslim, who else would it be?"
You DO realize that members of other religions and races commit these crimes as well? Such as the white supremacist who killed a hundred people in Norway as a protest against "Muslim encroachment on his land"?

(135,425 posts)Yesterday Mr Lorets Paris lawyer, Francois Gibault, confirmed he had given Le Point magazine photographs and documents to support the claims. Mr Gibault also revealed how Mr Lorets mother had described the affair to her son.
According to her story, the relationship began in 1917. Although Hitler, then 28, was fighting the French near Seboncourt, in the northern Picardy region, he made his way to Fournes-en-Weppe, a town west of Lille, for leave.
There he met Miss Lobjoie who, according to the lawyer, later told her son: One day I was cutting hay with other women, when we saw a German soldier on the other side of the street. He had a sketch pad and seemed to be drawing. All the women found this interesting, and were curious to know what he was drawing. I was designated to approach him.
The pair started a brief relationship and she said Jean-Marie was conceived after a tipsy evening in June 1917. He was born the following year.

(4,711 posts)The fact that he justified it with the previous spilling of innocent blood doesn't matter... he just handed somebody else further down the timeline the same justification to spill more innocent blood.
The two sides need to just have it out and be done with it. I don't think peace is going to come any other way. They're way past the point of talking it out.

(12,231 posts)the American government might possibly react in a reckless and excessive way to the events of September 11, 2001? In the case of an over-reaction, the American government would likely create for itself another Vietnam quagmire, and possibly more than one such quagmire. Vietnam was costly for America, and Afghanistan was costly for the USSR. The USSR no longer exists, and perhaps this is more than a random coincidence, but has some connection with the USSR's war in Afghanistan. If the goal was to provoke an over-reaction, then the collapse of America would be anticipated as an indirect result, but Muslims would die as a direct result of the over-reaction.
Would a radical and militant Muslim from Algeria be likely to consider service as a French paratrooper to be an acceptable career choice for a genuine Muslim? Would you be shocked to read in a history book that a member of the IRA killed a Protestant soldier? Wait, there's more. Can you imagine a member of the IRA who was Catholic knowing that the soldier was Protestant (and therefore Christian) and nevertheless killing the soldier?

(46,192 posts)does being named Mohammed make you a good guess for killing people? (of course not!)
i mean come on! that's why it's racist, or at least a slur based on one's apparent nationality/race.
and this isn't asking what side people are on, it's saying someone is a killer because they have a name that sound like someone who kills Jewish people.
are you expecting the trolls and racists to be really really obvious for all of us? (and to be fair, this one is obvious to almost everybody)
