French Police Say They Have Cornered Suspect in School Shooting

The man was identified in French media reports as Mohammed Merah, a French national of Algerian descent. Interior Minister Claude Guéant, speaking at the site, said the man told negotiators that he belonged to Al Qaeda and that the attacks were meant to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and to protest French military deployments abroad.

In the case of an over-reaction, the American government would likely create for itself another Vietnam quagmire, and possibly more than one such quagmire. Vietnam was costly for America, and Afghanistan was costly for the USSR. The USSR no longer exists, and perhaps this is more than a random coincidence, but has some connection with the USSR's war in Afghanistan.
