Laid-Off Registered Republican to GOP Congress: "I just want someone to have a freaking heart"

A registered Republican who says he votes "libertarian," Holton has found the experience "maddening." After being laid off in June 2013, Holton, who lives in Mason, Ohio, exhausted his six months' worth of state unemployment benefits, and only received a few weeks of federal insurance before it expired on Dec. 28.

Holton is taking classes to become a network administrator, and he got some part-time work doing housing maintenance. But he's only making $240 a week, significantly less than the $385 he would have received weekly in unemployment benefits. Recently, he has begun contemplating a move to China, convinced that he would be better off there teaching English to foreigners.

"I just want someone to have a freaking heart," he said, referring to members of Congress. "They are going home to a house where all the utilities are paid for, and we are here struggling."

First you're a republican. Second, you vote libertarian, the political philosophy that tells you all government is bad and not to rely on it for anything.

The "Independents" I know are the first to hold their hands out for bennies when they hit hard times, but when they pass, they continue to vote Republican and talk about lazy liberals leeching off their hard-earned tax dollars. I have sympathy for anyone hitting hard times, but am very frustrated at the utter self- absorbed people who pull up the safety net behind them after they've gotten theirs. They don't learn shit from karma.

He contemplates running off to a Communist country because his welfare is exhausted and he takes a job paying less than he got off sucking on the teat of the government he despises as a libertarian. Lord Almighty - truly mind-boggling.

I know a lot of people that vote republican like him and are a few paychecks from defaulting on their mortgage and lines of credit. People should only vote for Republicans if they want the rich to benefit while they suffer. The GOP don't care about middle class workers or the poor.

The more Republicans who express their disappointment with the GOP, the better our odds in November.

The more Republicans who vote Libertarian, the better our odds in November.

there are some truly heartbreaking stories in that article.

We can do better than this.

If Congress doesn't act, then we're going to have to get over this rugged-individualist bullshit and start coming together in local circles of support to pool our resources and help each other on our own.

"It is beyond belief how our country, as wealthy as we are, can't figure out a way to help those who need it most," he said. "Basically we are saying, 'tough luck.'"

It's not that we can't figure it out, it's that those methods are being actively squelched.

"Russ, take a good look at who voted it down: Republicans, especially libertarian-friendly ones who go on about how government is strangling business. Did you vote for them?

The creative destruction of a capitalist economy requires a safety net and the kind of regulations libertarians hate, Russ. Otherwise the destruction part takes over and chews everyone to hamburger. Everyone, including you. Libertarians don't understand that, but liberals do. That's why we're liberals.

If you want heart, Russ, back the people who are famous for having one, 'bleeding' and all."

by focusing on what politicians actually DO, whether their policies hurt or harm, rather than the party they belong to.

Libertarians need to learn that. So do those who blindly support corporate Democrats and Republicans.

We need to be the human 99 percent and demand policies that actually help.

"I Sold My Heart to the Junk Man". That you did Mr. Holton. Elections do matter. And even libertarians like yourself very often become part of the collateral damage when the decision is made to leave your "freaking heart" at home while voting against your best interests.
