i really did not know it was getting that cold. wasnt paying attention. son ran out of gas a little up the street, i heard him puttering out, at 6:30 am, total dark. i go with the gas can in slippers a jacket.... no coat gloves or hat. i found out it was -24 with wind chills. stupid, stupid. son was wearing shorts, lol.

(63,912 posts)Everybody expects snow. Life here gets to be one big accommodation to the snow gods. I'm in full puff parka from L.L. Bean right about now and high snow boots. Hopefully, I'll go to my next level down coat, thinner gloves than the paws I've got now, and low boots by mid March.
I feel like my house was built expecting this kind of weather.

(23,720 posts)if it is the bathroom sink or the kitchen sink, open the cupboards so the heat goes in there. My cold water pipe in by basement bathroom kept freezing we rarely use the bathroom down there, but we've had below zero temps for about a month now, so I regularly check the pipes on all outside walls. I thawed it out with my hair dryer and took the stuff out of the cupboard, and left the doors open and it hasn't froze up again.

(110,159 posts)this morning both the hot and cold frozen so i gave up. i can put my little heater in there thru the night, you think? but if it is an outside wall, wouldnt the outside temperatures have to go up?
notadmblnd
(23,720 posts)but if you thaw it and then let it trickle all night, it shouldn't refreeze. the last thing you want to do is give up. If a pipe bursts you'll have a heck of a lot more grief than you've got now.

(2,529 posts)I live off 46 near Boerne and the well company came over today because one of my pipes burst from the freeze. But, I still don't have water because the pipes are frozen and they told me I probably won't have any water until the weekend when the temperature goes above freezing.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)fingers crossed. trying to thaw out now. i am so sorry you are in the position you are in. hugest of bummers, not having water.

(2,529 posts)Saw some of it when I'd get contract nursing jobs in Kerrville and Fredricksberg a few years back. It gets colder up there than it does over here. Conversely, it gets about 5 degree colder where we're at than in San Antonio twenty miles south of us.

(2,529 posts)The city didn't know how to handle it and didn't have the salt and plows to clear the streets. The interstate, state roads and all main thoroughfares grinded to a halt. People were buying T-shirts that said "I Survived the Blizzard of '85."
