The latest salvo in the abortion wars comes in the form of a bill in the Tennessee Legislature that would result in the online publication of the names of doctors who perform abortions, and -- according to critics of the measure -- potentially out individual women who undergo the controversial procedure.
The Life Defense Act of 2012, which is under consideration in the Tennessee House of Representatives, would direct the state Health Department to post on its website a report on every abortion, to be filled out by the facility where the procedure takes place.
The reports must include the "identification of the physician who performed the abortion and the physician's office, clinic, hospital or other facility where the abortion was performed," according to the official summary of the bill.

Although the bill states that patients will not be identified in the reports, it says the documents must include the woman's county, age, race, marital status, plus her number of prior pregnancies, number of prior abortions, the gestational age of the fetus, and her preexisting medical conditions. That, critics say, could make it easy to guess identities, particularly in sparsely populated rural areas.

(6,160 posts)Rep. Gary Odom (D-Nashville) called the bill "very dangerous," and said the Republicans who voted it out of a House subcommittee offered "no explanation as to why this was something that needed to be done."
"It puts a target on women's and physicians' backs," he told HuffPost. "I think it's a very dangerous piece of legislation and serves no purpose I can tell other than trying to intimidate women and physicians."

The House Health and Human Resources Committee is expected to vote on the bill Wednesday, and Odom said he expects it to pass in the GOP-dominated House. It will then move to the state Senate, where Republicans are also in the majority.

Somehow I thought medical records were confidential by law.

(14,860 posts)It's also possible that at least some of these legislators truly wish the doctors and the women to be killed. Plenty of people were very pleased when Dr. Tillman was murdered. At any rate, this isn't just about attempting to shame them. It's about terrorizing them.

If this passes, it should be mandatory that each lawmaker who votes for it to have their entire medical history published for everyone to see.

(14,860 posts)Clearly, the intent is to influence the decisions of the doctors and the women by causing them to fear for their lives for making the "wrong" choice.

(39,961 posts)targets on the back of women and their doctors. The legislator who dreamed this up, and everyone who decided it was a good idea should get their heads examined. This is about the most irresponsible legislation I've ever heard of.

(6,160 posts)We are surrounded by morons. I am in an exchange with one right now on Facebook about the new Executive Order signed by Obama. She claims Obama does not respect the Constitution. I am waiting for her to provide an example.
I pointed out that all he did was revise previous Executive Orders by many Presidents since the 1950's, but she does not trust him. I bet she trusted ole Dumbya.
