Columbus Zoo Mourns the Loss of Gorilla, Pongi
POWELL, Ohio - A 49-year-old gorilla named Pongi has passed away at the Columbus Zoo.
The female western lowland gorilla received an extensive examination Saturday morning because of concerns including lethargy, trembling, elevated respirations and a droopy lip.
Veterinarians said she arrested during recovery and they were unable to resuscitate her.
A necropsy is now being performed.
Pongi has been a member of the Columbus Zoo since 1985. During that time she gave birth three times.
