1. DEFICITS are **ESSENTIAL** to the Republican Agenda

Their grand strategy (articulated by Grover Norquist, whose pledge for no new taxes has been signed by most R's in Congress) is STARVE THE BEAST in order the shrink government to a size that can be drowned in a bathtub.

What does that mean?

It means the ultimate destruction of Social Security, Medicare, et al, by depriving these programs of the funds needed to keep them going.

How can that be accomplished?

The only way to eliminate popular programs that have successfully helped American citizens for generations is to eliminate the funding, and the only way to do that is with Huge. Budget. Deficits.

Republicans are not deficit hawks, though they have successfully portrayed themselves as such. The plain fact of the matter is they can never achieve their long term goals without Huge. Budget. Deficits.

So if you really want an answer to the question of How Come Republican administrations run up Huge. Budget. Deficits., all you really need to do is examine their long term agenda.

Reagan & Bush didn't run up Huge. Budget. Deficits. because they were clueless about the effect of their policies; they ran up Huge. Budget. Deficits. because Huge. Budget. Deficits. are essential to the ultimate goals of the Republican Party.
