George Rekers, Anti-Gay Activist, Co-Founder of Family Research Council Caught With Male Escort.

George Alan Rekers, a prominent anti-gay activist who co-founded the conservative Family Research Council, was caught returning from a 10-day trip to Europe with a male escort he found on Rentboy.com, which is exactly what it sounds like.

UPDATE: The escort now says Rekers is indeed gay, and that Rekers paid him to perform daily nude body rubs during their European jaunt. "It's a situation where he's going against homosexuality when he is a homosexual," the young man told the New Times, adding that Rekers -- who repeatedly asked for a move he dubbed "The Long Stroke" -- ought to divorce himself from his many anti-gay associations.

Rekers has a new explanation for the trip. "I deliberately spend time with sinners with the loving goal to try to help them," he said in a statement posted on Facebook.

The Miami New Times promises more details and a profile of the escort, whom they codenamed "Lucien" but whose identity has been revealed elsewhere.]

Funny, when my grandfather caught me in the basement of the parsonage with a partially clad neighbor girl, that line didn't work then, either.

are the very ones pushing anti-gay legislation. What is it that drives them to be the opposite of who and what they are inside? Is it GOP mind control or brainwashing?

Even if the story is old, I never can understand this kind of action.

It is denial, lack of self-respect, self-righteousness, the inability to deal with reality.
It permeates their entire life, not just the sex life.

True the GOP does have a very VERY hard time dealing with reality. You make a very good point.

I think many people do- I mean, I can live with the denial that I will die someday. That's a pretty big one. I can believe that I know things that I don't really know.
I can 'hide' from something I know I 'should' do. (There's one of those 'should,' 'would' words.)
It can be such a subtle thing that we just don't see it..

Maybe George has sat alone at night and thought for hours and hours about coming out and ending the farce. Just not a good time. Never a good time.

I have to say from first hand experience that it is very human nature of us to try our best to avoid difficult situations that would put us on the spot and end up with long bouts of depression. No one ever enjoys those kind of soul crushing moments.

I've never denied the fact that I will die, I have comfort in knowing that it is inevitable. I'm strange like that.

because they are absolutely horrified by them. So they become conservative, virulent anti-gay Republicans who are very vocal about the thing they fear/hate the most about themselves.

I heard one such person explain that in a radio interview, after he came out of the closet of course. It really makes sense, despite it appearing to be self-defeating and backward. I feel sorry for these walking contradictions. They really should just become open-hearted liberal Democrats and join up with the likes of us, who will never judge them or punish them for being who they are.

...doing so will invite so many (self-reporting, nearly 40% of the nation) to heap endless invective, scorn, hatred, and condescension on you. It's easier -- SAFER -- to pretend to hate those like you and try to keep from remembering that deep down inside, the hate you feel is for your yourself and your own fear.

Opening up for voluntary punishment -- no matter how well-meaning, or how well it may end up in the long run -- is not something most people can simply up and do on a moment's notice. And when you know that opening up WILL bring that response, it's hard to think of it as anything else than just that - punishment.

It's like asking someone to get beaten 8 hours every day, but at the end of the day someone will give them a 2 second hug. But if they can put up with that for the next 20 years, they'll feel much better when it's all over. Who would take that offer, sight-unseen?

to themselves and others that they aren't gay. "Look at how much I hate gay, see? I can't be gay. I hate it."

It is because they are gay but grew up being taught it was wrong and they can't come to grips with it so they have to deny it. Its the ultimate form of denial to persecute people who are like what you are afraid to admit you are.

People who aren't gay don't really care.

...Busted - down on Bourbon Street
Set up - like a bowling pin
Knocked down - it gets to wearing thin
They just won't let you be

You're sick of hanging around and you'd like to travel
Tired of travel, you want to settle down
I guess they can't revoke your soul for trying
Get out of the door - light out and look all around

Sometimes the light's all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
what a long strange trip it's been

Truckin - I'm goin home
Whoa-oh baby, back where I belong
Back home - sit down and patch my bones
and get back Truckin on

Yeah, right. Indeed, this is a dog bites man story since so many gay haters turn out to be gay themselves. The preacher out of Colorado Springs comes to mind.
