This teacher is a treasure and our children and society would benefit greatly if her approach were taught to all teachers and parents too.

(153,174 posts)And every single Friday afternoon, after the students go home, Chases teacher takes out those slips of paper, places them in front of her and studies them. She looks for patterns.
Who is not getting requested by anyone else? Who doesnt even know who to request? Who never gets noticed enough to be nominated? Who had a million friends last week and none this week?
You see, Chases teacher is not looking for a new seating chart or exceptional citizens. Chases teacher is looking for lonely children. Shes looking for children who are struggling to connect with other children. Shes identifying the little ones who are falling through the cracks of the classs social life. She is discovering whose gifts are going unnoticed by their peers. And shes pinning down- right away- whos being bullied and who is doing the bullying.

(8,821 posts)That teacher is risking getting fired for not teaching to the standardized tests. After all, how can the standardized test corporations make any money if teachers don't get with the standardized program?

(1,074 posts)Wonderful article, wonderful teacher but the article left me hanging! It would have been nice to know how the teacher emotionally helped the kids who needed it. Bullying is something I've always felt needs to be addressed more strongly in schools. It always breaks my heart me when I hear of someone who has committed suicide from having been bullied. And, yes, dealing with bullying as a serious issue can not just save a life by preventing a suicide, but can also save lives by preventing a Columbine.

(1,365 posts)I wish every parent that "didn't care about tests" would let their children boycott them.
And this teacher would like to know about the math lesson!
