(84,711 posts)Charleston and up to Willmington, NC. That's not going to be good. I have relatives there so I'm keeping a watch on Twitter as to how that progresses. Folks aren't used to how treacherous ice storms can be to power lines, tree's snapping and the dangerous slick road conditions and iced bridges. I read they don't have salt spreading trucks down there and so the work has to be done with manpower and shovels to try to cover the bridges and major roadways. Not Good...(but then they don't have these storms enough to have truck spreaders...so there's nothing else they can do.)
Stay safe wherever you are...but if it's an ice storm...please be extra careful if you haven't been through one before--its very different from snow. You don't see the ice (called black ice) because it looks like the road is clear...and next thing you know you're skidded into a tree or worse. They can't cover every spot.

It's gonna be ice in Charleston. Once I was in an ice storm with the power off for 8 days. We had a wood stove but it was still very primitive conditions. They interviewed some old country dude who had weathered it in an unheated location. He said, well, "first ma fish froze, then ma dowg froze and then I froze..." Some old lady living alone said she got into bed and got some snacks beside her and stayed there for a week.
There will be people in trouble in this.

(84,711 posts)so the flight was delayed over an hour. They were lucky to take the Metro rather than drive or take cab because apparently the snow started so early that the roads were a mess
given folks don't know how to drive in it so there were many accidents.
Apparently they had made it to the airport just in time but as they walked in got the delayed flight alert on cell phone. They encountered a mob with a woman who was shouting "Praise Jesus...and Come Home to the Lord" and reading sentences from the Bible.
My friend said she was glad the woman was in from the cold & snow because you could tell she was mentally disturbed--and said she worried more about those under the bridge overpasses in ally ways with no shelter and than minor disturbance of the poor woman who at least had found a way to have some shelter and she didn't seem to be bothering anyone with her preaching. My friend is very good-hearted as well she should be..
I'm in NC...and we are supposed to get the snow later tonight. I'd rather have that than an ice storm any day. The last one we had took down tree limbs and we were without power and heat for a day and a half and driving was treacherous for days after. But, that was better than what those folks in the rural areas had to go through.

(84,711 posts)for a 48 Minute inflight time back to NC called and she'd been sitting on plane for 2 and 1/2 hours and didn't know when she'd get back to NC...because of the delay to get on the plane for two hours and sitting on the runway for over 2 hours. She hopes maybe by 8:00 p.m...but, then her cell phone died.
She will arrive probably when we are in the midst of the storm. I told her to get a hotel room at airport and charge it to her company! She deserves it for what she's been through.
They did break flight rules and offer her pretzels and a free drink....(since she hadn't eaten since noon today...) It was kind of them to do that. Luckily she had a granola bar tucked away.
sitting on the runway for 2 hours...cruel. What a day to be traveling. Hope she got back safely.

(84,711 posts)and..on the plane for well over two hours with pretzels and a "free drink" and then delayed more. It's no problem....she texted she's glad she got the "Last Flight Out" and she isn't some entitled person looking for everything to be great for her trip. She was there for a meeting because she needs to keep her job. She's not some slacker who is looking for a "free ride."

(17,111 posts)I think it's really a sacrifice to Leon in hopes he will not be too bad. It sure won't help much.
As far as no salt, plows, etc, there is really no use for them except for once in a blue moon. It would be a waste of money to keep a fleet of plows or tons of salt and sand on hand. The sand is not that hard to obtain. I'm sure they ravage construction sites and places where sand is obtained.
People will put 'blades' on the front of their trucks and tractors. They hope to make a dollar or two. The items I have seen on the front of vehicles to plow is scary.

(1,014 posts)We had an ice storm here in NC about 10 years back that left us without power for 6 days. That sucked balls. I told hubs after that that between the hurricane blow-over and the risk of snow and ice, I refused to live one second more without a generator. Now if I could only get the snow chains I want for my van, I'd be all set.

Ice storms are another matter. When it's over and the sun first comes out, go take a few pictures. Then run back inside before all the projectiles start to come down. They hurt.

We get ice. Ice under the snow. Ice on the snow. Or just ice on ice. It's nasty and will bring down trees and power lines in a heartbeat.

(84,711 posts)starting tonight. Which is better news than a full blown Ice Storm. So if the freezing rain doesn't accumulate on the Trees then there will be less power outages. Still the Snow, Sleet and cold will make for some bad driving conditions...and still worries about the "black ice on the roads."

IN GENERAL OUR ACCUMULATION FORECAST IS FAIRLY SIMILAR TO THE
PREVIOUS PACKAGE. HOWEVER WE ARE NOW SHOWING A BIT MORE SNOW AND
SLEET ACCUMULATION ACROSS THE CHARLESTON TRI-COUNTY AREA DUE TO A
SLIGHTLY QUICKER CHANGEOVER LATE TONIGHT COINCIDENT WITH THE BEST
SYNOPTIC FORCING. WE ALSO SHOW SLIGHTLY LOWER TOTALS ACROSS
COASTAL SOUTHEAST GA WHERE THE TEMPERATURE PROFILE WILL NOT
SUPPORT MUCH ACCUMULATION UNTIL LATE THIS EVENING OR OVERNIGHT.
WE OPTED TO CHANGE THE ICE STORM WARNING TO A GENERIC WINTER STORM
WARNING FOR ALL AREAS SINCE WE ARE NOW SHOWING GREATER SNOW/SLEET

(13,893 posts)that they don't peak slightly in the middle so that rain and sleet can run off. Because of this, they get incredibly slippery very quickly with even a small amount of moisture. They can be treacherous. Be careful folks, don't venture out unless you really have to.
