Coca-Cola's latest advertising gimmick added fuel to the fire of LGBT activists angry about the Sochi Olympic sponsor's silence surrounding human rights violations in Russia.
A South African website that invites users to "Share a Virtual Coke" returns an unseemly error message when one tries to enter words like "gay," "lesbian," "bisexual," and "queer."
"Oops," the site responds when a user tries to enter any of the above words. "Let's pretend you didn't just type that. Please try another name."

(53,989 posts)This is so disappointing on a number of levels. Coke has often been quite supportive of GLBT causes, but this is so unseemly.

(53,989 posts)Anything for a buck. I understand the need to sell one's product, but there are so many avenues and one doesn't have to resort to homophobia because, in actuality, it will be more harmful in the long run. Gays have long memories!

(53,989 posts)That's what really upsets me about this with Coke. It isn't like they are struggling, so why pander to bigotry? As much fucking Coke as I drink (and I probably have more Coke in me than blood), I think I will write them and ask !

(72,381 posts)I found that out yesterday when I saw this article. Not sure how much of this is anti-gay and how much is anti-slur with a very wide casting net, but it wouldn't hurt to ask them to be sure.

(2,337 posts)Occam's Razor:
Coke wrote the program to prevent anyone from writing a word which could be used as a pejorative.
This make come as a shock to some, but some people aim to offend others by labeling them with sexual terms.
My guess is that coke knows this, and they had their people ensure that "asshole, lesbian, fuckhead, queer, etc..." could not be used.
Now, what makes more sense? That coke purposely alienated gay people, because "FUCK BUSINESS!", or that Coke knew that they might catch flack for allowing 12 year olds to harass each other with messages like "Hey john, you big queer fuck, enjoy a coke! Cheers!"

(55,148 posts)Sochi Olympics sponsor came under fire after a social media campaign allowing you to personalize a Coke can - as long as it wasn't 'Gay'
Coca-Cola has apologized for a South Africa social media campaign that banned the word gay. The Sochi Olympics sponsor set up a new marketing campaign in South Africa encouraging fans to share a virtual can of Coke personalized with a friends name or message. But when it was discovered they had banned the word gay, by itself, then it caused an outrage. Coca Cola has now apologized for what they call an unintended outcome.

But thanks for giving the benefit of the doubt.
People don't apologize if they haven't done anything wrong.

(8,217 posts)So, Coke came up with a virtual share a coke application on a website, where people can't type certain words that can be considered as slurs or profanity?
People are getting upset that they have utilized a word filter that would take off words that they think can offend people.
The application allows words such as (straight," "hetero," "homophobe," "homosexual," and even "LGBT" which are generally not offensive.
So, basically people got upset due to other people creating other names on cans using possible word combinations, or is it because they didn't allow people to write certain slurs? A word filter is problematic since we don't know what would offend people if a particular word is taken out.
Still, go to sites with word filters, those words that have been mentioned would also not be allowed.
This is why we can't have nice things. It is also why that site has changed their method and only allowed pre-approved names for the cans, and you'd have to submit a name for them to check before placing it on.
--Sorry, I mean, I read the article before posting, but it just wasn't clear and did not have enough detail. I mean, it is understandable that they made a wide word filter to avoid slurs since there are many immature people that would use such a thing to just write profanities. It did not explain what was objectionable about it clearly.
I apologize, but sometimes I miss context, and wouldn't mind being told why a bit more.
