Former Santorum flunkie, Matt Shaner, fires entire arena football team during dinner

Matt Shaner is a former aide to Rick Santorum who gets his millions and primary ownership of the Pittsburgh Power, an arena football team, the old-fashioned way: his rich daddy gives them to him. He unsuccessfully tried to buy his way into the Pennsylvania state House of Representatives back in 2008, and is as good example of a spoiled, entitled rich brat as one could find.

Last week, as Power players were enjoying a pregame meal at an Olive Garden in Orlando, Fl, they were informed that the entire team had been fired.

The situation: A pending AFL (Arena Football league) players' strike that had been called the night before by their Players Association. Shaner and his counterpart owner of the Orlando Predators stymied the players' plans by simply letting everyone go...but some players who agreed to leave the union could get their old jobs back under the old, worse terms.

Power releases entire team just hours before kickoff

By Jerry DiPaola, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Saturday, March 10, 2012

After the Arena Football League players union declared a strike Friday, the Pittsburgh Power struck back, releasing its entire 24-man roster just hours before the season-opener.

Power owner Matt Shaner fired his players during the pregame meal at an Olive Garden in Orlando, Fla.

"I'm putting food in my mouth and being read, from a piece of paper by our owner, that the Pittsburgh Power as a whole is now terminated," said former Power center Beau Elliott, who played at Highlands High School and Indiana (Pa.). "Mid-statement, all the players got up and left. Every player got up and left while he was still talking. There were 15 to 20 angry, large individuals."

Shaner said the players who did not re-sign will not travel back to Pittsburgh with the team and will have to return at their own expense.

The AFL Player's Association was calling for an increase in the $400 game checks paid to most players on each team. The union demanded a 300 percent increase in the minimum salary. AFL owners countered with a $100 raise.

(Those players who agreed to leave the union and resign were signed back under the old terms, and didn't even get the proposed $100 raise.)
