Propane shortage spreads to Northeast along with Arctic freeze

A propane shortage that started in the Midwest has spread to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic as another deep freeze blankets the region.

Gov. Chris Christie on Jan. 8 signed an emergency declaration allowing drivers of delivery trucks to increase their work hours, because of "multiple winter storm events, extreme cold weather and the lack of propane and heating fuel products ..."

AmeriGas, the nation's largest retailer of propane, has customers in all 50 states, spokesman Simon Bowman said today from corporate offices in Valley Forge, Pa.

"What is going on is not just us, but the whole industry rationing deliveries at the moment," Bowman said.

Customers who don't have seasonal contracts with fuel suppliers will find that prices are climbing quickly. The wholesale price of propane has risen "60% since this time last winter," Bowman said.

both are 150 gallon, and one is still full, the other 3/4 full.
