In national polling versus Hillary Christie has tanked. The drop-off came almost entirely from Independents.
In New Jersey state polling Christie has tanked. The drop-off came almost entirely from Democrats.
I would suggest that outside the dead-red arc (that connects idaho to south carolina) a Republican can only win by convincing people that he or she is "pretty much a democrat"... somehow not one of those republicans.
And this is why the loss of Chris Christie really hurts Republicans.
The only way they can get someone who can at least be *presented as* sane (McCain, Romney and Christie are in that category) through the primary process is to have someone who is a known quantity.
There is no way to develop a (supposedly) sane Republican in the primary process.
Fox News backs Christie for a reason. He offered their best chance of winning. He was the "money" candidate... the vehicle for big business who wants a winner.
And it is not obvious who the next "sane" Republican is. Probably Jeb Bush, but contrast Jeb Bush to Chris Christie (pre-scandal)... it is a huge drop-off in following, enthusiasm, trust, freshness, charisma, star-power, media luv.

(17,493 posts)I would be willing to bet that the investigations into his administration will eventually reveal that he misused his office and indeed is a bully. Politics in New Jersey is a dirty business.
However if the investigations do not come up with something concrete, Christy will emerge relatively unscathed. That doesn't mean that he will win the Republican primaries as many Republicans consider Christie to be far too liberal.
Sure, the rumors of scandal will haunt him especially if he gets the chance to run for President in the general election. Hillary also has some baggage. (Of course that assumes that Hillary is the Democratic candidate which does seem most likely at this time.)
The state of the economy and the success of the ACA will probably be the prime factors in the next Presidential election.

Even *if* he survives politically in New Jersey, he's now known as both a bully and an incompetent boob who doesn't even know what his own staff is doing.
