I can relate, *David*, only I'm battling my neighbors' obnoxious lights with Japanese Cedars (that aren't growing fast enough)!

He had a neighbor who pulled the same thing, pointing several blindingly bright lights straight at his house. Even worse, they were connected to motion sensors that were so sensitive that they'd turn on every time an ant fart moved a blade of grass. After weeks of complaining, and weeks of hearing the neighbor say "It's just light, go buy some curtains", he solved it brilliantly.

Rather than take the guy to court, he borrowed a laser light show machine from someone and mounted it on his house...connected to a timer that turned it on randomly and pointed STRAIGHT at his neighbors house. When his neighbor complained about the laser "turning his house green every time it turned on", my friend told him that he'd become concerned about his properties security...since the neighbors security light was constantly turning on, there was obviously a security threat, and he believed that lasers would be more intimidating to criminals than floods. After all, no neighbor would be that rude to another neighbor unless there was a REAL security threat, right? Besides, it was "just light", and he could just close his curtains if it bothered him.

The neighbor put in dimmer bulbs, pointed them downward, and reset the sensitivity on his sensors. His point was made.

The one set of neighbors who live diagonally behind me are quite nice. I haven't mentioned it yet, mainly because their basement is teen central and I know if the lights are redirected, they'll likely be moved back at some point. I figure two more years and I'll be good to go with the shrubs, but I may cave and extend my next-door neighbors' wood fence about 8 feet.

The neighbor behind me is a FLAMING asshole -- we got into it over his humongous, messy, half-dead Leyland cypress. He has a really attractive English lamp-post in his backyard, but has recently added some sort of blinding LED light. I won't even bother asking him. A monster golden euonymus blocks some of it out, and the Japanese privet are growing fast and should block out the rest by the end of this summer.

First world problems, I realize, but geez. Do people not think?!

One day we drove by a neighbor's house and there was a huge green tarp strung from the trees across the driveway. Spray painted on it in garish orange letters was "THANKS FOR THE LIGHT SHOW!"

I didn't figure it out until driving by one night...the neighbor across the street had installed bright "security" spotlights, pointed right up the other guy's driveway toward his house. The tarp hung for nearly a year until weather had made it so tattered they had to take it down. He actually went so far as to move his driveway to the other side of his house (at considerable expense, I might imagine), and built a large stockade fence across his front yard.

I have no idea what battles went on between these two during this span of time, but the guy with the security light left it on 24/7. I guess out of spite, he re-directed one so it was directly pointing at his neighbor's windows.

This Christmas, the tarp guy hung big wooden cut-outs of Santa and Mrs. Claus on the front of his new fence, right across from light guy's driveway, so they were lit up by his spotlights. He also put big cartoon speech balloons over their heads. Santa was saying "Merry Christmas to All!" and Mrs. Claus was saying "And Happy New Year! Except for one of you."

Having been through a similar episode (it would shine through the front window directly onto the television!), I have to admit to many giggles.
