Especially government announcements of things. It's always a mix, as it was in this case.

I'm starting to think this administration regards the Constitution much like the previous admin did, "just a goddamned piece of paper".

I am not a fan of the Blue Dogs...but fortunately the last election ....the Tea Party took half of them out...that was actually a boon for our side...but the thing is...this problem with "establishment" Democrats you rebuke is....you are going to need them next November...unless of course you think you can change enough minds to the far left in time before another 2010 happens...'cause believe me...the Republicans are going to be fired up again to do a referendum on Obama in the Midterms...

everyone to give some civil liberties up"

"The president's big speech on the NSA today was an extended exercise in running in place. The one thing it was not was an ability to strike a "balance" between the current surveillance state and civil liberties "concerns." (You will note that the Bill of Rights is now apparently a Bill of Concerns.) There is very little question that the former is being asked to give up very little of its power -- I decline to feel comforted by the fact that intelligence agencies have to submit requests to a secret court -- while the latter are being asked to adjust their expectations to the reality of new and gathering threats."

Throughout this evolution, we benefited from both our Constitution and our traditions of limited government. U.S. intelligence agencies were anchored in a system of checks and balances, with oversight from elected leaders and protections for ordinary citizens.

"Balls. COINTELPRO. CISPES. The McCarran Act. The Plumbers. Mossadegh. Arbenz. The "U.S. intelligence agencies" were anchored in nothing but their own arrogance. The president should be ashamed to base his arguments in such plainly ahistorical balderdash."

I'm accused of that on DU all the time, and I said "no".

It had a few things I liked but not enough specifics.

And while I think it puts pressure on Congress to step up (rather than bluster), I don't expect either side of Congress to be able to do that.
