I've been taking augmentin and ibuprofen to go along with the shots, but I can't keep a thing down. Is that the antibiotics, or the ibuprofen?

(8,554 posts)so, as others have pointed out, that may be the culprit, but I do know about Ibuprofen and it makes me sick as a dog if I sometimes am forced to take it without first eating something.
At least, just a handful of nuts or crackers before taking it, will lessen the effect it has on my digestive system.

Retrograde
(10,137 posts)since the drugs also affect the beneficial gut bacteria. Did your medical provider provide you with information on the drug and likely side effects? Were you given information on how to take the drugs - i.e., on an empty stomach, or with a light meal, any other drugs (including alcohol) to avoid while on the antibiotics? If not, ask for them now.
My sympathies: I've always had problems choking down antibiotics. The last time I had to take some for a bad infection the doctor and pharmacist recommended yogurt with active cultures to help repopulate my gut. And, bad as it may seem, take all the ones prescribed.
Glad to hear you're getting better!

(17,600 posts)definitely, taken while I was taking the antibiotic.
You have to pay attention though, to whether it's ok to consume stuff high in calcium or other minerals, within a couple hours either side of taking the antibiotic. For some it's ok, for some you have to make sure to take it hours away from the pill or you lessen the effectiveness of the antibiotic.
Also, people with symptoms should consider kefir (kind of like liquid yogurt with more different probiotics). Found in the dairy section of a natural food store or good supermarket. Also GNC sells probiotic chews and those will really help someone who needs to "catch up" after being on antibiotics for awhile without taking probiotics.

(35,348 posts)had 2 young ones with her in my yard a couple years ago. If you got within 20 feet of her she would bristle up and hiss. Last spring I was digging a hole to plant a tomato plant one afternoon and I look up and here comes a raccoon running right at me. I ran inside and got my pistol and shot it. There is something wrong when they are out in broad daylight like that. Like any wild animal they are cute but they are a wild animal. Once when I was little my grandmother sent me out to pick some tomatoes and I saw this Opossum laying in the garden, I picked him up by the tail and carried him down to the house to show my grandmother, I put him down on the porch and he ran away. Peppermint is great for nausea, too. Even peppermint candy like LifeSavers or candy canes. You don't need much. If you can get peppermint leaves you can make a tea.
Whichever you use, use a small amount to start with.
And for sure you should get some live culture yogurt to make up for all the good bacteria the antibiotic will be killing. Settle your stomach first with a little ginger or peppermint, then dig into the yogurt.

(10,175 posts)Treatment after exposure is highly successful in preventing the disease if administered promptly, in general within 10 days of infection.[1] Thoroughly washing the wound as soon as possible with soap and water for approximately five minutes is very effective in reducing the number of viral particles.[48]
In the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends patients receive one dose of human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG) and four doses of rabies vaccine over a 14-day period.[49] The immunoglobulin dose should not exceed 20 units per kilogram body weight. HRIG is expensive and constitutes the vast majority of the cost of postexposure treatment, ranging as high as several thousand dollars. As much as possible of this dose should be infiltrated around the bites, with the remainder being given by deep intramuscular injection at a site distant from the vaccination site.[15]
The first dose of rabies vaccine is given as soon as possible after exposure, with additional doses on days three, seven and 14 after the first. Patients who have previously received pre-exposure vaccination do not receive the immunoglobulin, only the postexposure vaccinations on days 0 and 2.
The pain and side effects of modern cell-based vaccines are similar to flu shots. The old nerve-tissue-based vaccinations that require multiple painful injections into the abdomen with a large needle are inexpensive, but are being phased out and replaced by affordable World Health Organization intradermal-vaccination regimens.[37]
Intramuscular vaccination should be given into the deltoid, not gluteal area, which has been associated with vaccination failure due to injection into fat rather than muscle.[citation needed] In infants, the lateral thigh is used as for routine childhood vaccinations.[citation needed]
Awakening to find a bat in the room, or finding a bat in the room of a previously unattended child or mentally disabled or intoxicated person, is regarded as an indication for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). The recommendation for the precautionary use of PEP in occult bat encounters where no contact is recognized has been questioned in the medical literature, based on a cost-benefit analysis.[50] However, a 2002 study has supported the protocol of precautionary administering of PEP where a child or mentally compromised individual has been alone with a bat, especially in sleep areas, where a bite or exposure may occur without the victim being aware.[51] Begun with little or no delay, PEP is 100% effective against rabies.[11] In the case in which there has been a significant delay in administering PEP, the treatment should be administered regardless, as it may still be effective.[15]

(1,925 posts)According to the drug profile.. Augmentin certainly can cause nausea.. also lists vomiting. But a side effect of the vaccine may be nausea as well.
You don't want to get dehydrated .. Ginger ale, flat coke (with sugar, not diet Coke) maybe dilute Gatorade.. The salt in the saltines and the sugar in the honey or flat coke.. are good for electrolytes...
(I was thinking you might keep down Herbal tea with honey..)
If the nausea/vomiting is constant the Dr will certainly want to know...so he can titrate therapy.
Also, the BRAT diet is often recommended for nausea.. Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast.... or your broth...

(39,961 posts)it was the augmentin. I have desisted taking it because it was horrible.

(12,151 posts)I did not pay enough heed to warnings about erythromycin I was once given for strep. Taking it "with food" was not enough -- you needed to eat some to coat the stomach, then take the pill, then eat some more. Lost it twice before calling the pharmacy for clarification.

(39,961 posts)It's damn near worse than the disease.
EDIT: And I can handle pain, it's the screwiness that goes along with this medication that is the problem. You get a little bit of rabies and walk around the house hissing.
Ask anyone that has ever had these shots. They do a number on you mentally. I don't care what anyone else says, I know, I'm having them.

(4,229 posts)Come in all bandaged up.
He had reached down in his feed drum in the darn and a coon was in there and latched on to him.
He got seriously torn up but he killed the coon with his bare hands because he was hoping it was negative and he didn't want it to get away and be unable to be tested.
But my wife said for the damage the coon did to him he probably should have let it go and took the rabies shots.
My wife works for the Health Dept so they test the heads for rabies.
