The author of Oklahoma's constitutional amendment banning marriage equality is unhappy, but also unsurprised, that the law has been struck down by a federal court.
On Tuesday, U.S. district judge Terence Kern ruled that the state's constitutional amendment banning the recognition of same-sex marriages violated the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution. The judge placed a hold on his ruling, expecting the state to appeal the decision.
Former state Sen. James Williamson, who drafted that constitutional amendment that was approved by voters in 2004 by approximately 75 percent, told Tulsa's KOTV that he believes Kern's ruling is an attempt to override the will of Oklahoma voters.
"The federal courts have always taken a much more activist view of the Constitution, and so that was a risk that we were going to see that...I think that what we did was the right thing back then, and it's the right thing right now."

(53,998 posts)It was funny, during the campaign, we weren't sure who was who because the ads were so generic and all about creepy children and them swaggering around looking for something to shoot. It wasn't until a canvasser came to the door with literature, that we found out the democrat had some decent positions, but more importantly, we finally knew which one was which!

(80,708 posts)I suppose the universal scales are somewhat balanced by how, around here, every 2 years the GOP has to find some poor shmoe to try to spend the campaign explaining how he's really not like everyone else with an (R) after their name, honest!

(205 posts)I think judge Kerns hold on his own ruling is probably a chess like move. We may see a stroke of genius in this kind of subtle withholding. If they appeal...and they will, we will see exactly WHO is involved and what their next move is, which of course ultimately shows their end game. A shot held, is sometimes, a shot your opponent walks arrogantly, or obliviously into. Or both. Checkmate.

(12,723 posts)Kind of a funny coincidence her having the last name the same as the judge who ruled.
Wilkinson may be a bigoted tool but he is nowhere near as open about being a hateful bigot as Sally waste-of-fucking-space Kern.
