(27,711 posts)The initial call by Zimmerman and seven 9-11 calls, but only the second one gets a recording of the gunshot, all the others are post gunfire, they describe the yelling/screaming and then the single shot, and then no more. Caller #7 is the longest call and is hysterical but describes having seen "wrestling," but then says they don't want to be a witness, not reliable, she is in shock, says "the man" yelled "help, help."
The Zimmerman call is very suspicious. He says Martin was just walking around, and then staring at him, and reaching for his waistband - "something is wrong with him" - "these assholes, they always get away" - then says he's running toward the back entrance. "Are you following him? We don't need you to do that" - "He ran" - He doesn't want to give his address, then "can you tell him to call me and I'll tell him where I'm at" - the operator agrees.

Now that the tapes have been released the case is getting renewed national attention. I expect that national pressure will begin to be felt by the Sanford police department. The mayor is feeling the heat. However, I fear that the local police force will continue to do the wrong thing.
We need to fight on the state and national level against laws like Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law that allow people to shoot anybody they feel like shooting, anywhere they feel like shooting them.
We need to fight against the national culture that encourages the police to dress and act like military special forces - without the training or discipline - and abuse citizens. We need to fight against the militarization of the U.S. That happens at the ballot box. It happens in day-to-day conversations with people in which we have the courage to say, "I don't agree with what the police did there." I don't agree with SWAT teams shooting OWS protesters. I don't agree with police officers tasing people.
We have to turn this country around.

This happened because of a bunch of problems that are national in scope. Racism, racial profiling, fear of "crime" encouraging people to murder and encouraging other people to enable murderers, willingness of too many people to let the police do whatever they think best.

(62,325 posts)stop right away. It definitely sounded like the person screaming was silenced by the gunshot. I can't see how the cops can say that was Zimmerman screaming. Why would the guy with the gun be screaming and why did the screaming stop once the shot was fired? I bet he was waving that gun around and that is why the teenager was scared and yelling for help.
I do not know why this guy Zimmerman has not been arrested.
And this is not the Zimmerman tape, it is an eye-witness tape.
Obviously, Zimmerman did not do what he was told to do. Seems like he wanted an excuse to use that gun.
How an unarmed teenager who did not have a car, could be any kind of threat to this coward who was armed and in a car which, even if there was a threat of any kind, he could have driven away in until the police got there.
This stinks and it also sounds like the cops trying to cover for this guy.

(62,325 posts)stating that his son is from a racially mixed family and that the charges of racism against him are false.
The tragic events of February 26 are very sad for all concerned. The Martin family, our family, and the entire community have been forever changed.
The portrayal of George Zimmerman in the media, as well as the series of events that led to the tragic shooting are false and extremely misleading. Unfortunately, some individuals and organizations have used this tragedy to further their own causes and agendas.
George is a Spanish speaking minority with many black family members and friends. He would be the last to discriminate for any reason whatsoever. One black neighbor recently interviewed said she knew everything in the media was untrue and that she would trust George with her life. Another black neighbor said that George was the only one, black or white, who came and welcomed her to the community, offering any assistance he could provide. Recently, I met two black children George invited to a social event. I asked where they met George. They responded that he was their mentor. They said George visited them routinely, took them places, helped them, and taught them things and that they really loved George. The media portrayal of George as a racist could not be further from the truth.
The events of February 26 reported in the media are also totally inaccurate. Out of respect for the on-going investigation, I will not discuss specifics. However, the media reports of the events are imaginary at best. At no time did George follow or confront Mr. Martin. When the true details of the event become public, and I hope that will be soon, everyone should be outraged by the treatment of George Zimmerman in the media.
Our entire family is deeply sorry for the loss of Trayvon. We pray for the Martin family daily. We also pray that the community will grieve together and not be divided by more unwarranted hate.
The Zimmerman family will have no further contact with the media prior to the resolution of the investigation. It would be greatly appreciated if the media would respect our privacy.
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/os-trayvon-martin-shooting-zimmerman-letter-20120315,0,1716605.story
The bottom line is that if Zimmerman had followed the directions he was given by the police dispatcher this killing would not have happened.
Also, three witnesses confirm what you can hear on the tape in the OP. That someone was crying for help and stopped right after the gunshot. All believe it was the boy, not Zimmerman, who was screaming for help.
It is a horrible tragedy, and I feel for both families. But someone is dead who should not be and Zimmerman is responsible for that.

(62,325 posts)More news that was reported today came from three witnesses who all say they heard the teenager crying for help, then they heard a shot, then silence. All say they believe the cries for help came from the teenager. That is exactly how it sounds on the tape.
One of the witnesses was a 13 year old boy. He, according to his mother, has been deeply depressed since that night. And he believes it was racism, that the teenager was targeted because, he said, 'people stereotype and this could happen to me'.

Strange, I posted a news item and the reactions are almost as if it is my fault that at least one of facts are not what they were assumed to be. And as if I am in some way defending Zimmerman. Which could not be further from the truth.
His father claims he is not a racist and I have no knowledge of him at all so I cannot say if he is or not. What I do know is he killed a teenager and apparently for no reason and he has not yet been arrested. Hopefully he will be. He said that Tray was gone.
Thats how Sybrina Fulton, her voice full of ache, told me she found out that her 17-year-old son, Trayvon Martin, had died. In a wrenching telephone call, the boys father, who had taken him to visit a friend, told her that Trayvon had been gunned down in a gated townhouse community in Sanford, Fla., outside Orlando.
<SNIP>
Trayvon was buried on March 3. Zimmerman is still free and has not been arrested or charged with a crime.
Yet the questions remain: Why did Zimmerman find Trayvon suspicious? Why did he pursue the boy when the 911 operator instructed him not to? Why did he get out of the car, and why did he take his gun when he did? How is it self-defense when you are the one in pursuit? Who initiated the altercation? Who cried for help? Did Trayvons body show evidence of a struggle? What moved Zimmerman to use lethal force?

It does not allow someone to:
A - Follow someone around
B - Chase them
Even if the shooter was attacked, the attack was justified. Martin was being followed by an older guy who just got out of his car and started walking towards him.
In conclusion - another a-hole who was looking to pull their gun out.

Following a person, while armed and then getting out of ones car and acting in a confrontational manner, also while armed, is the act of aggression. The boy would have been the one acting in self defense.

"A neighborhood eighth-grader out walking his dog said his family also called 911.
"I saw someone lying on the ground, and I heard screaming," said Austin, 13, whose mother asked that his last name not be published. "I don't know that it was the person on the (ground) who was screaming, but to me it sounded like a kid who was crying. It was a yell for help, and I think it was Trayvon."
Austin wasn't sure if the person was in a fight or had slipped and gotten hurt. Austin's Boxer puppy got off the leash so the boy went chasing after the dog and lost sight of the scene for a moment. Then, he heard a gun go off.
He ran home and told his sister to call the police.
The boy, who is black, has been rattled ever since. He feels angry and disconcerted, and wonders whether he's at risk too.
"That people can stereotype like that makes you scared," he said.
Austin's mom said he's been acting out in school and seems mad all the time.
"My son has a terrible feeling of guilt, because he did not do anything to help. He's angry," said Austin's mother, Cheryl Brown. "They are saying that Trayvon looked suspicious, because he was walking slow. So I guess I have to tell my son: make sure you always run fast."

This incident is not all about race. It also involves the growing tolerance in the U.S. for violent vigilante behavior against perceived "terrorism." We've all watched the police forces around the nation become armed with military gear. There is a culture in the U.S. now that praises vigilante idiots like this Zimmerman and excuses their behavior. There are numerous examples every week around the nation of police invading the wrong houses, shooting innocent people mistakenly suspected of some vague crime, tazing young children until they die, etc. It's not all about race but race plays a key role - most of the victims are not white.
