I don't think so.

Two scenarios:

1) He didn't know and didn't bother to ask obvious questions about the issue.

2) He knew and is now lying.


In the first situation he is a stupid buffoon incapable of running a state government, never mind a national one.

In the second he is a vindictive, bullying lying bastard who orders his people to break the law, then hangs them out to dry when the crimes are discovered.


Neither scenarios are helpful to a political career.
