It was our middle son calling from Fort Drum," Dad, I'm home" Great words to hear! I told him that both his Mom and I have been waiting a long time to hear them!
"Dad, I'm Home" Nicer words have never been said.

(11,304 posts)I bet just hearing his voice brought you back to when he was a child. I know when we were stationed overseas and didn't get to make it home for 3 years man I missed my family so much. Every so often I would call. Back then it was expensive. I always worried my mom would die and I couldn't get home. Then when we got home she got to see our son who was 3 by then. All my family came over to see us at mom's house. She always would have a big Italian meal for us. Usually veal cutlets and Lasagna. Wow it was great. Reunions are wonderful. Of course leaving for the next assignment leaves you in tears. But at least I got to call her everyday. To this day I live in another state and I still talk with my sister everyday. I cherrish those days.
Enjoy your family visit.

(9,900 posts)Thank him for his service, and suggest he enrolls with the nearest Veterans Administration health care facility as soon as he is eligible (if he is a short timer).

(53,339 posts)That has to be a HUGH relief. I'm happy for him--and for you.
When you talk to your son again, tell him "Welcome home" from another who once served and survived.
