"We deeply regret the remarks made by a few students at today's game. The words of these individuals do not represent the sentiments of our pep band, athletic department or university. We apologize to Mr. Rodriquez and will take quick and appropriate disciplinary action against the students involved in this isolated incident."
Southern Miss interim athletic director Jeff Hammond met with Kansas State athletic director John Currie Tuesday afternoon to express the university's regret over the matter.
Hammond said that he planned on taking the band director to meet with Rodriguez and possibly Kansas State coach Frank Martin.
"I want to reach out to Conference USA and anyone else who is impacted by this and take full responsibility for this," Hammond said. "This does not represent the state or university. This is not acceptable."

(122 posts)The Prez apologized publicly....only problem was she misspelled the young man's last name in the release. Makes it worse in my opin...she just wants to put the fire out before she's consumed by it. There is also word that the ADs met and a possible meet with the player, the band director, and others is looking to be set up. This boy has an opportunity to school these kooks. He needs to do the talking first. Call em all out, Immigration Law, KKK hotbed, backwoods 'tude, the whole parade. THEN maybe the smallwits could talk

(82,849 posts)There's some language attempting to minimize this ("a few students" and "isolated incident" , but the upshot is "We apologize," we "will take quick and appropriate disciplinary action" and "this is not acceptable." It's really not that hard, provided you're expressing actual remorse and contrition.

(22,165 posts)This apology was appropriate. I clicked on this post expecting to read something "Rush Limbaughesque" and instead read a very appropriate response.

(58,897 posts)It really did sound like tow or three people. I should note that, at the top, university officials may come from all over the country. So they are more likely to be mortified by that conduct.

Athletic director should pay. He (no doubt it's a he) should resign.

(39,961 posts)He didn't back away from it, he took responsibility for it, and didn't equivocate on it.
I'm tired of people in public positions that pretend that it isn't their responsibility to do something when something horrible happens.
