One factor in Mitt Romney's underwhelming performance in Tuesday night's Deep South primaries could be his habit of blurting out pandering whoppers like this one, (in front of a crowd at Pascagoula, Mississippi): "If the federal government were run more like here in Mississippi, the whole country would be a lot better off."
Insert spit take here. Donna Ladd, editor in chief of the Jackson Free Press (and proud Mississippian) makes a devastating case for why the federal government would most assuredly not be better off if it ran like her home state:

And:
Tell us Mr. Romney, was this the Mississippi touch you feel the federal government so sorely lacks?

(16,846 posts)I wish that clip had been played nationwide; it showed the GOP's hand. That is their true goal; they do, in fact, want the entire country to be like Mississippi. I wish more people would visit here and observe, but of course no one wants to visit because the place is so fucked up. Every time some Republican proposes to take some more of the tax burden off the rich and place it on the shoulders of the working class and the middle class, just think: someone has just gotten advice from some crook in Mississippi about how we do things down here. Every time you see Mississippi's hand out, just remember: the legislature has given the rich another tax cut in order to make it necessary for the people here to go begging to the federal government. The nation has just about become one giant Mississippi. Take a look at our national debt and then look at who has had the most benefit from bankrupting this country. Come visit Mississippi and see your future, America!

(10,942 posts)The country should be run like a state that is perpetually last in education attainment, last in citizen health quality, last in personal income, first in the percentage of people living below the poverty line, first infant mortality. Wake up Mitt.
