CT Du'ers: Teachers under attack in CT - Call your Legislators to oppose SB-24
This bill that Democratic Gov. Malloy along with Stefan Pryor his Commissioner on Education (who has never taught) are pushing is backed by Conn-Can a charter-school advocacy group. It also has the backing of Michelle Rhee and her organization Students First, who is running ads in the state to manipulate parents into supporting this. Michelle Rhee also supported Gov. Walker in WI's union-busting attacks on public employees, and severe budget cuts to schools. This bill reflects many of the hall-marks of corporate ed-"reform". It will radically change the tenure system, take-away local control of schools from many districts, make teacher's evaluations pay and firing linked to student's scores on standardized test-scores, subsidize more charter-schools at the expense of public schools, and even reduce the professional certification requirements of teachers who currently need a Masters. Gov. Malloy has shown himself to be insensitive and virtually clue-less about the needs of students, and teachers, when he said in a speech to the General Assembly, ""basically, the only thing you have to do is show up for four years." However, state legislators who are up for election this year, might be more cautious when they hear from us. Call your legislators to oppose this.
