GOP: Old, white and in trouble, poll says

Reporting from Washington—

The Republican primary campaign so far hasn’t produced a nominee, but it has had one clear outcome – worsening the GOP’s image among the young, the better educated and the non-white.

That finding, from the Pew Research Center survey released Wednesday, could be a serious handicap for the party in elections this fall and in years to come, said Pew’s director, Andrew Kohut.

“The Republicans really are the party of white people, and especially older white people,” Kohut told reporters as the poll was released. “They’ve done nothing in this campaign to make themselves be more favorably viewed” among other parts of the electorate.

That verdict won’t come as a surprise to many Republican strategists. Some, including Karl Rove, the architect ofGeorge W. Bush’s electoral victories, have been arguing for years that the party needs to find ways to reach out to demographic groups, particularly Latinos, who are increasing as a percentage of the population.

think it is so sad to see these elderly people who really vote on one social issue. They don't see the republican party is going to screw them if they get their way. But no there going to vote against their financial interests because the republican party knows how to sell it better then the democrats.

and if the elections don't go their way, i.e. Obama loses, I really think a large part of them have other remedies in mind. No matter who wins, the next 4 years will likely be the ugliest in the history of this country.

...it will force the party of 'Cant to move further to the right into the most extreme areas of that bag of anarchy. This will ensure a twelve year period of Democratic dominance of the White House and Congress and will usher in a new era of progressiveness.

By pandering to the stupid, the ill-informed and the corporatists the Republicants have sealed their own doom.

From my perspective, goopers have been reaching out alright - to deliver a smack upside the head to non-white demographic groups. It's practically reflexive and seems to come quite naturally to them.

For years a lot of the hatred and ignorance of the rushpublican party hid below the surface...you knew there were things about them that were crazy but felt they'd never be goofy enough to follow through. We knew they didn't like "colored" folks but they didn't actively go after preventing them from voting...or women with reproductive rights or the anti-immigrant (Mexican) noise. All this was whipped up and amped up on Faux Noise and then chewed over endlessly on hundreds of hate talk stations. They built their bubble and then inside it's been a race to the bottom to see who could "out-conservative" the other...usually with the most outrageous and moronic ideas...and a lot of dangerous ones as well.

We're seeing the rushpublicans eat themselves alive....but like a caged animal they're dangerous and lash out in all directions. We're seeing that anger now being directed inwards and I see further ruptures ahead at what is sure to be a contentious convention.

Cheers...

"older white people" together there, Mr. Kohut. Perhaps using the term "some older white people" would have been more accurate.

The group of known murderers is overwhelingly male.

There is not the slightest implication there that males are overwhelmingly murderers.

Your inference is in error, not his statement.

It is why they feel the need to pass new voting laws to discriminate against people who are not part of their base.

I feel it is now inevitable. They can't reach out to new demographics without angering the people who have stuck with the party as it currently exists. They are in a no win situation and they know it.

All they can do is screw up the works while they try to hold on to their government jobs a while longer. The downfall of the Republican party will happen. Only the Democrats turning on themselves can save the GOP now. Lets hope we can hold off until after the GOP falls before we do that (again).

Sisters, cousins, nieces. What the hell is wrong with them? They know it's wrong. They know it will adversely affect the women in their own families.

Can you imagine how the women who are related to them feel? They have to live with knowing these men will happily vote to sacrifice their health and even their lives, to make a political point. They hate the President more than they love their women and girls. I'm very glad my own dad, who normally remains firmly in the throroughly brainwashed RWer camp, isn't going along with them on this. It would break my heart if he did.
