US Senate deal reached on court picks

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans and Democrats struck a deal Wednesday that turned the heat down on a dispute over judicial nominations, but the issue could easily boil over again in the coming months.

While the two sides traded barbs Wednesday on the Senate floor, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the nomination of Stephanie Rose to be the next federal judge for Iowa's Southern District. Rose, based in Cedar Rapids, is currently the U.S. attorney for Iowa's Northern District.

The Southern District headquarters is in Des Moines, with divisional offices in Davenport and Council Bluffs.

Rose enjoys bipartisan support, but whether she receives Senate confirmation this year could depend on how Wednesday's agreement plays out.
