Black President key to making War unpopular?

There is a large chunk of America that would NEVER criticize an American war. Never. Not ever. No matter how futile or nakedly corrupt the enterprise, it is anti-American to ever criticize an ongoing war.

But when that "love it or leave" core of ultra-nationalists decides they want "their" America back, it's impressive how unpopular war can be.

82% Opposition to the war in Afghanistan? That's incredible. Not that is should be popular, but there's no reason it should be more unpopular than Iraq and Vietnam... except that the perma-war hard-core in American society does not consider Obama to be a legitimate President.

Washington (CNN) – Support for the war in Afghanistan has dipped below 20%, according to a new national poll, making the country's longest military conflict arguably its most unpopular one as well.

The CNN/ORC International survey released Monday also indicates that a majority of Americans would like to see U.S. troops pull out of Afghanistan before the December 2014 deadline.

Just 17% of those questioned say they support the 12-year-long war, down from 52% in December 2008. Opposition to the conflict now stands at 82%, up from 46% five years ago.

"Those numbers show the war in Afghanistan with far less support than other conflicts," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "Opposition to the Iraq war never got higher than 69% in CNN polling while U.S. troops were in that country, and while the Vietnam War was in progress, no more than six in 10 ever told Gallup's interviewers that war was a mistake."

Every time I hear one whining about Afghanistan, I remember how much they loved war when it was Repubs in charge. Of course, when Obama leaves Afghanistan, and it goes to shit, as it inevitably will, they'll screech that we should never have left, like they're doing now with Iraq. Whatever happens, Obama will have done it WRONG.

In your own OP you say opposition to Iraq "never got higher than 69%". Ahhhh, the Iraq war lasted roughly 8 years. The Afghan war has been going on for 12+ years. That is 50% longer. That 69% opposing Iraq would be a lot higher than 82% if that war was still going. The only thing it has to do with Obama is that he can't give a credible answer to what we are doing in Afghanistan. Nobody can.

And you are dead wrong about Vietnam. In May, 1971 only 28% agreed with the War. That was two years before U.S. involvement in the war ended. That was the last time Gallup polled that question. And I believe the President at that time was white.
