Dead air on Progressive talk radio

Mike Malloy had some dead air tonight. Could advertisers be bailing out an both progressive and RW to cover their asses or do they just think Mike Malloy is another RW host since the majority of talk radio is RW.

Here's the difference:

Rush will stay on AFTER the financial bottom falls out, Malloy will not.

The 18-49 Demographic doesn't use old media like radio. OxyRush is a loss leader for the corporate masters, no progressive hosts are. How else does he make almost as much as Oprah in a fading media.

Rush was at the point he was charging stations to carry his show before this latest blowup. He was that popular.

While some progressive hosts are making money for their stations, some stations have dropped them entirely.

Media is a green eye shade business. No numbers, no air time.

There could be no other possible explaination. Therefore, all progressive voices are doomed.

Just overtly angry progressive voices.

In this new atmosphere I think the more bombastic progressive radio hosts should, step back and adjust. Look to Rachel Maddow as an example of advertiser friendly but effective progressive talk. She cuts down the Right politely and with a smile. That's a great template for success in this new anti-angry, anti-controversy advertiser climate.

Edit: just realized you were kidding. Lol.
Well anyway, I still think Rachel is a great example of how to be effective but avoid alienating advertisers.

Ever since I've been listening to Prog radio I've heard long dead space and mostly Public Service Ads because so few companies want to advertise on Prog radio and the numbers werent there.

But a small businessman here in Portland advertises quite heavily on Prog radio during the day for his car repair business. He even makes long on-air op-eds about current political topics. Some of the best I've ever heard. And he says it works very well for him.

I hear a lot of the same snake oil products on both RW and progressive talk? Do advertisers think progressive talk listeners are old men like OxyRush's listeners>

said presciently that this could lead to advertisers bailing on progressive hosts too that are considered too hot. However, I never heard Mike calling anyone a slut. He reserves his anger for those elected officials who deserve a dressing down like the war criminals George Bush and Dick Cheney.

when Malloy was addressing the criticisms. Of course if you go to google you'll find the usual suspects like NewsBusters, The Blaze, etc. accusing Malloy of trash talking the tornado victims when he was really attacking religion (a whole different thing but still violating the conservative sacred code)

15. I think talk radio generally.

Until two years ago, I was both the producer of a progressive local talk radio show and its account executive. I went from business to business, store to store in three counties, looking for advertisers. We had a great rate of $1500 for three months M-F, 7 to 9 a.m., two 60 second spots per show. We'd write and produce the spot with sponsor approval.

You have no idea how discouraging it was to be rejected like I was. I managed to sell maybe 8 spots in the 2-1/2 years we had the show.

And it was a great show. Local, regional, state, tri-state, national, and international news, breaking news. We broke the story of the missing Gov. Mark Sanford before any of the othe NYC talk radio shows. Gov. Don Siegelman was a guest four times. Guests included Helen Thomas, Alan Grayson, Dennis Kucinich, Carl Reiner (to name a few). Tollfree call-in number.

I have my theory that local business was unfamiliar with advertising on local radio and they were uncomfortable with spending money during a recession. Plus, we were building an audience and there wasn't any appreciable response to our advertising. How do I know? My law firm advertised for 6 months and we didn't receive a single call.
