I'm out here on the West Coast (only a little after 9 pm) and they are doing the same thing outside my house!

Trigger-happy doesn't even describe it, celebrating three hours early with their gun blasts.

I bought a house and vacant lots in Houston's Third Ward in 1987. The first New Year's Eve, there was twenty minutes of heavy gunfire followed by forty minutes of sirens from ambulances going to the Texas Med Center. By the time I left in 2005, the neighborhood was then known as the Museum District and there was only five minutes of gunfire and no sirens - a vast improvement. I will never forget my cat trying to run under the bed when there were gun shots. That didn't work out too well since my bed was a mattress on the floor. But he tried real hard to get under it.

revolvers into the air and one rifle and perhaps one shotgun.

Normally I hear far more gunfire. Perhaps everybody here is too broke to waste ammo or it's too hard to find at the store.

July 4th was also more quiet than in previous years. Fewer people set off fireworks on both holidays.

neighborhood. This year, nothing. It was 6 degrees below zero at midnight. Even fools stay indoors.
