What I like the most is that Michelle Obama is obviously a strong, intelligent woman, and she is secure enough (and obviously President Obama is secure enough as well) to not feel that she has to play "the little woman" or take the back seat!

She is the perfect mate for this man. . .they represent what a post feminist era union should be: an EQUAL sharing in the relationship. . .no one is left behind in the kitchen or having tea with the little old ladies!

Not because I dislike her - quite the contrary. But because they focus on how the woman looks, as opposed to The Woman behind those looks.

I used to unrec them, back on ol' DU2, militant feminist that I am.

But I just have to K&R this thread. Because of the LOVE so amazingly evident between this man and woman in that first photo. O.M.G. Just beautiful to witness!

It's so refreshing to see a functional family in the White House. I just searched google images under "laura george bush" and didn't find a single photo of the previous first couple even looking at each other.

So cheers to our First Couple: may they always gaze at each other and see The Person behind those good looks.

The poster I responded to said that this blows away every stereotype the racists had. I disagreed because there is also a stereotype that African-Americans pull out all the stops in order to look good. I've certainly encountered this stereotype before. That's not to say others don't like to look good or that the stereotype is even true. But it's out there. Besides, the Obamas aren't French, nor are they Hollywood actors, so stereotypes about those people don't matter here.

Look at their hands. Look at the way their arms hang limp even though they're so close they're nearly touching by accident.

If I'm that close to MY wife anywhere, we're holding hands.

This pic reminds me of the one from the basement of the White House, when they were pictured in passing. Not a thing in the entire pic made me think they might have had any physical contact during that encounter.

. . . how the statements which try and detract from the beauty of the moment seem to reflect more on the character of the poster than of the First Couple. You regularly express distain and derision of this President and your statement echoes that negative view.

Even your reference to 'gushing' reflects the distain and derision you regularly offer up to supporters and folks who compliment the Obamas.

Interesting that most posters here readily recognize and acknowledge the obvious love apparent between the two.

That said, it's really not an occasion for holding hands; especially in these particular shots -- which are absolutely stunning.
