Groundswell, the conservative behind-the-scenes organization that forms a coalition between prominent Republicans, right wing media, and conservative activists to wage a 30-front war against Obama and progressives has been revealed to have played a role in the hype and false scandalization of the Benghazi controversy. A secret tape released by Crooks And Liars (audio below) has detailed the cooperation between House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), Ginni Thomas (the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas), former Rep. Allen West, as well as high-ranking members of Judicial Watch and Breitbart. The meeting was presided over by Catherine Engelbrecht, one of the founders of the voter suppression group, True The Vote.
In the tape, Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy and Jerry Boykin of the Family Research Council are revealed to have met with Boehner and Issa to discuss Benghazi:
A secret audio tape of one of Groundswells weekly meetings shows that prominent members of the group pressed House Speaker John Boehner and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the chair of the House oversight committee, to expand the Benghazi investigation and make this supposed scandal a top-priority for congressional Republicans. This recording indicates Groundswells mission extends beyond message coordination to scandal-stoking. (Mother Jones)
Also in the tape, which covers the first 20 minutes of a Groundswell meeting, they also reveal that GOP congresspeople are willing, albeit reluctantly, to raise the debt ceiling, which may be excellent news for future Washington negotiations. Unfortunately, however, they also discussed their war on voting rights insanely accusing the left of being the political force attempting to disenfranchise voters.

(31,849 posts)That was usually reserved for a "suspicion" of such a relationship (or a claim that was not believed). The Thomas' relationship would have gotten Thomas tied to a tree ... by the neck ... in a noose, and whipped ... maybe to, or after death.

(13,618 posts)that his peers looked at him as undeserving to be in law school because of affirmative action. You can bet that he looked at other black students that he perceived as lesser scholars exactly that way. Never getting that without affirmative action, he would have been denied admission, no matter how hard he studied.

And it isn't just a "theory". The justice department should be all the hell over this.
This kind of thing is dangerous for national security.

(12,977 posts)Her True the Vote group is known for busing white suburbanites into inner city voting precincts to intimidate black voters. It was one of those most prominently making a stink about how hard it was for them to get IRS non-profit status.
Englebrecht is also tight with Groundswell and the Breitbart crew -- particularly with FBI snitch Brandon Darby. Here's a really creepy video from a couple of years ago of her interviewing Darby about Occupy Wall Street, where he pulls out all the old McCarthyite-style smears. These are not honorable people.

(145,489 posts)Englebrecht lives in Fort Bend County and Juanita Jean has been sending this idiot messages for some time. See http://www.juanitajean.com/2012/10/07/true-the-vote-more-like-true-the-mail/ and http://www.juanitajean.com/2012/10/10/true-the-vote-can-kiss-my-big-blue-butt/ and http://www.juanitajean.com/2013/03/28/an-open-letter-to-cathy-engelbrecht-queen-of-true-the-vote/ The last message was about some real voter fraud committed in Fort Bend County
Dear Ms. Engelbrecht,
As head honcho of the King Street Patriots and True the Vote along with being a neighbor of mine, I tragically and mistakenly assumed that you thought voter fraud was serious bidness.
I was very mistaken. True the Vote is just a money raising scheme for you. I apologize for any damage that my false assumption may have caused you on your quest to rock stardom in GOP circles and your own slot on Fox News.
Early last October we gave you rock solid Supreme Court proof that your own personal candidate for County Commissioner in Fort Bend County, Bruce Flemming, voted in two different states Texas and Pennsylvania in the same damn elections. In 2006, 2008, and 2010, Bruce voted in person in Fort Bend County and by mail in Pennsylvania in the same general elections. According to his financial disclosure forms, Bruce Fleming also owns a house in Pennsylvania. (He homesteaded a house in Texas and a house in Pennsylvania, but that illegality is a whole nother story.) Bruce felt that owning houses in both states gave him the right to vote in the same elections in both states. Thats a third degree felony in Texas.
We gave you copies of the papers and everything. We also gave you proof that his wife did it, too, in 2010.
Voter fraud only matters if it is committed by a Democrat. True the Vote has ignored the voter fraud committed by a republican because this group is only about raising money from idiots in the GOP base

(12,977 posts)Tea Party Group Screams IRS Persecution, But Judge Ruled They Illegally Aided the GOP in 2012
Monday, May 20th, 2013
On March 28, 2012, Chron reported that a Texas Tea Party group with the word Patriot in its title was found by a judge to be a PAC and not a nonprofit. The judge ruled that as such, it illegally aided the Republican Party in poll watching efforts during the 2010 elections. ...
The ruling grew out of a 2010 lawsuit filed by the Texas Democratic Party against the King Street Patriots. The Democrats charged that the organization made unlawful political contributions to the Texas Republican Party and various Republican candidates by training poll watchers in cooperation with the party and its candidates and by holding candidate forums only for GOP candidates. ...
AlterNet was not impressed, writing in October of 2012 that True the Vote urged poll workers in key Ohio counties to supplement their official state training with TrueTheVote materials. Of course, as they point out, it is a crime in Ohio to interfere with conducting an election. Moreover, after the 2004 presidential election the state signed a federal consent decree that, among other things, established uniform poll worker training. True the Vote, operating as the misnamed Voter Integrity Project in Ohio, was barred from Franklin County after allegations of falsified signatures. ...
Southern Studies reported: True the Votes tax status has been a source of ongoing controversy. In their 2010 tax returns, True the Vote and the Houston-based tea party group that founded it, King Street Patriots, claimed to be a 501(c)(3) organization. However, the IRS doesnt consider either group to be a 501(c)(3), a fact which the True the Vote website implicitly admits by saying its 501(c)(3) status is pending.

(145,489 posts)True the Vote, a Houston-based voter watchdog group that arose from a tea party organization, filed suit in federal court Tuesday against the Internal Revenue Service over the agency's processing of its request for tax-exempt status.
The lawsuit, filed by the conservative ActRight Legal Foundation, asked the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to grant its request for tax-exempt status and award damages for what it described as unlawful conduct by the IRS. True the Vote, which was founded in June 2010, is affiliated with the King Street Patriots, a tea party group which started in December 2009.
Originally called KSP/True the Vote, the group filed in July 2010 for tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) charity organization. In August 2011, the group changed its name to True the Vote Inc.; King Street Patriots has separately been seeking the 501(c)(4) status from the IRS. True the Vote has come under fire for intimidating African-American and other minority voters at the polls.

(113,083 posts)to construct a narrative about the deaths of a US ambassador and consulate workers in order to obstruct the governance of this nation during an ongoing economic crisis, should those involved be called to testify under oath about their plot before they are removed from office?
Now why can't progressive organizations pay media to conduct poll questions like that the way Republicans do?

The Groundswell people and True the Vote are all subsets of a larger GOP movement trying to frame the issues and take rights away from voters.
