70+ USS Ronald Reagan Crew Members, Half Suffering From Cancer, to Sue TEPCO For Fukushima Radiation PoisoningBrandon Baker | December 27, 2013 2:28 pm
........................
At least 71 sailorsmany in their 20sreported radiation sickness and will file a lawsuit against Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), which operates the Fukushima Daiichi energy plant.
The men and women accuse TEPCO of downplaying the danger of nuclear radiation on the site. The water contaminated the ships supply, which led to crew members drinking, washing their bodies and brushing their teeth with contaminated water. Paul Garner, an attorney representing 51 sailors, said at least half of the 70-plus sailors have some form of cancer.
Were seeing leukemia, testicular cancer and unremitting gynecological bleeding requiring transfusions and other intervention, Garner told New York Post.
Senior Chief Michael Sebourn, a radiation-decontamination officer assigned to test the aircraft carrier, said that radiation levels measured 300 times higher than what was considered safe at one point. Meanwhile sailors like Lindsay Cooper have contrasted their initial and subsequent feelings upon seeing and tasting metallic radioactive snow caused by freezing Pacific air that mixed with radioactive debris.
We joked about it: Hey, its radioactive snow! Cooper said. My thyroid is so out of whack that I can lose 60 to 70 pounds in one month and then gain it back the next. My menstrual cycle lasts for six months at a time, and I cannot get pregnant.

(26,749 posts)The Navy has no legal oblation to keep out of harm's way... In fact it's just the opposite.
And that assumes that there's any substance to the allegations... When there isn't.

(13,685 posts)So you were there and had all the best measuring devices and now you have done a medical exam on these sailors? Because that is the only way you could have any right at all to say what you have about this situation.
Am guessing it makes you feel good to call all these USN sailors some kind of liars?
FBaggins
(26,749 posts)The central claim (that they were put in danger because Tepco lied) is demonstrably false... because the Navy had better information re: the radiation levels at sea than Tepco had and acted on that... not on anything the company said.
Second... almost none of the claimed illnesses and cancers have been associated with radiation exposure - even at levels many MANY times larger than the largest possible dose.
Am guessing it makes you feel good to call all these USN sailors some kind of liars?
Who says that they're all lying? Some ambulance chaser tells them that their heavy menstrual cycle a year later is caused by radiation... how are they supposed to know any different? Some of their statements have been provably false... but even that doesn't mean that they're lying.
So you were there and had all the best measuring devices and now you have done a medical exam on these sailors?
Interesting that you post that... because they did have accurate measuring devices (it's a nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed ship designed to operate during a nuclear war after all) and reported the doses at the time... but I'm guessing that despite pretending to defend the honesty of sailors in one breath... you'll now tell us that those reports were lies.
Also - how many of them have actually had medical exams that identified a radiation-related illness? None that have been reported to date.

(13,685 posts)Did you see it coming? If you did, would you say, like you always have, it is nothing? That's probably what the ship's captain said. Either that or he didn't see it coming. Take your pick.
You have credible evidence of just what was in that plume? No, because if you did you would be posting it. Instead you just say what you always have: It was nothing.
Now you are making medical claims about radiation and its effects on these people, yet you have no medical background. So I call bullshit on you making any medical claims. Of course you will say like you always say: It was nothing.
You should just go back to the backwater E&E forum you love to spread your: "It was nothing" bullshit. You have made yourself look awful here now too.

(26,749 posts)That's why they moved away.
If you did, would you say, like you always have, it is nothing?
Not "nothing"... but nothing to worry about. They were over 100 miles away from the source and were aboard a ship that's designed to fight with nuclear warheads exploding nearby. That's why the lawyers had to get so "creative" in imagining a source of exposure for some of their clients.
That's probably what the ship's captain said. Either that or he didn't see it coming. Take your pick.
Neither. As was reported at the time, they saw it coming and relocated quickly. Then they decontaminated the ship and measured doses to those who were exposed.
You have credible evidence of just what was in that plume?
It's no secret what was in the plume. Why are you acting as if nobody knows?
Now you are making medical claims about radiation and its effects on these people, yet you have no medical background.
Neither do the ambulance chasers making the claims... but the people who do have the appropriate background have spoken clearly on the subject - and there's no room for debate.

(13,685 posts)There you go telling stories with no backing. You are just making stuff up to protect the nuclear industry.
""... a ship that's designed to fight with nuclear warheads exploding nearby""
What a fucking joke.

(26,749 posts)What's my background again? Oh right... you don't have a clue.
And yes... Nimitz-class carriers were designed to survive in a nuclear conflict.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)I have a clue what your background is. But what I know is your front here of telling bullshit about nuclear power "How clean it is!!"
You present no research here, but make bold claims about USN sailors and their seeking some form of justice for their injuries.

...Also the radiation problem is a concern for the nuclear industry in India that is costing human lives. Cancer, goiter, infertility, mental retardation is common radiation problems in the areas of nuclear site in India....
