(10,952 posts)a friend. The housing development she lives in is in a more rural area so it is really really quiet. The temperature rose up enough today to start melting the ice on the trees from last Friday's ice storm. All the furbabies are getting along really well. I have told my friend that I think that one of her cats now wants a little doggie friend to play with.
Merry Christmas to you too!

(8,175 posts)And am fine with it, but I understand where you are coming from. When I was younger, healthier, and alone, I fixed my loneliness on Christmas by making a Christmas dinner and inviting single coworkers to share it with me. It was always fun and heartwarming.
Now my body won't let me fix big meals, or I'd still be doing it.
Don't be afraid to reach out to others. Instead of sitting back and being lonely, go out and try to help others. You will be so glad you did.

(42,239 posts)By choice - could've gone out for a drink. Always fine on my own. Multitasking as usual - watchin' Man of Steel ', playing with the cats, sorting out banjo parts and fiddlin' about here.
Hope your hip's fine soon - I settled for steroid jabs.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

(26,582 posts)I was going to spend the day with her, but she's sick. She said we'll do our Christmas on Friday. I'll spend part of tomorrow with my dad and stepmom.
The upside is I bought myself a PS3 for myself and it was delivered today, so I'm playing with that.

Will catch up with eldest son tomorrow, when he cooks with a friend. Not sure when I'm seeing my social butterfly of a youngest son, who is also going away with some family friends for a few days -- maybe not until our road trip north to see my mom...

(13,776 posts)When I need a little distraction, watching videos on YouTube can be helpful... you can travel the world from your armchair.
Hope tomorrow is a lot better for you.
But, I'm not sure tomorrow will be much better due to this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1018540537
There was also a lot of weird shit that went down around where I live today, too (home invasion w/ shooting, and shoplifter killed in car chase). Just a really crappy day. Some of that will be better, but I'm still going to have to go back and tend to two freaked-out kitties who are missing their brother.

(13,776 posts)It happened to a friend of mine (i.e., it was her dog that died while she was away and she got the sad phone call). It's hard, of course, but I'm sure that your sadness and compassion will make it easier for your friend--I think it will really make a difference to know that someone else is sharing in their sorrow.
I wish your environment felt a little more settled; it must be disconcerting to have gone through your bad time while other bad things are happening around you.

(32,086 posts)He had some sort of immune system problem, and his people knew his lifespan was going to be shortened, despite the fact that he's been doing well. He also had urinary tract issues, and I suspect he may have gotten blocked, although he wasn't showing any of the symptoms. They actually took it better than I did.
I think things around me will be okay, although I'll feel better when they catch those home invaders. Meanwhile, I'm watching a show I hadn't seen before, "Bones". It's pretty good, and fairly distracting. Not much else on tonight that I want to watch. I probably should have stuck to my original plan to watch "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", but I just don't feel like it...

I've got two fresh crabs, a loaf of sourdough bread and sixer of moose drool, so no worries.

(10,252 posts)and I'm really ok with that. I'm playing a computer game (Grepolis), drinking a little wine, reading stuff at various favorite blogs and just being ok about everything.
I'm content, my bills are paid, my health is ok, not pissed at anyone, and just generally grateful to be live and well. May all beings be from suffering and from the causes of suffering. May all beings know happiness and the causes of happiness.
Merry Christmas, God lives within you as you.

Film Review: Reeves comes off bogus in 'Ronin'
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- In Japan, the story of the 47 ronin is so central to the country's national identity that a special word exists for the act of retelling it: Chushingura. But despite this long tradition of flexible reinterpretation, the Hollywood-backed "47 Ronin" takes such liberties with the underlying legend that a different term comes to mind, one better suited to American actor Keanu Reeves' involvement: "bogus." So far, Japanese audiences have been slow to embrace a CG-heavy version of the story that offers Keanu as a previously unsung "half-breed" accomplice. Meanwhile, domestic crowds are being deliberately misled to think he's the star -- a high-stakes bait-and-switch sure to backfire on this narratively stiff but compositionally dazzling production.
In theory, director Carl Rinsch's considerable visual talents should have been the draw, with the expectation that the first-time director would deliver on the promise of his dazzling short film "The Gift." Sure enough, in his hands, "47 Ronin" rivals the epic martial-arts films of Tsui Hark or Zhang Yimou in terms of sheer spectacle.
But as the budget crept ever skyward, reportedly reaching as high as $225 million, Universal's marketing department shifted into panic mode, opting to disguise the fact that the true heroes of this epic Japanese legend were themselves Japanese, and positioning Reeves' character -- described as the shameful "love of one night" between an English sailor and a local peasant girl -- as a superficial ploy to attract international crowds.
Like all Chushingura, "47 Ronin" recounts the tragic Ako incident (spoilers ahead), during which Lord Asano (Min Tanaka) was forced to commit seppuku after illegally striking an unarmed royal guest, leaving the 47 samurai who had been under his command without a master. After more than a year adrift, these ronin (as disgraced samurai are known) returned, staging a daring night raid in which they took their revenge, vindicated their master and were ultimately forced to sacrifice their own lives in punishment.

(48,121 posts)My daughter is with her mom in California for the holidays. She made the trip safely, though both of them (and myself) have bad head colds.
That she made it OK is my Christmas gift.
I plan on hanging out with my son tomorrow and playing 7 days to die, eating dinner, and then going over to a friend's place because he is all alone for the holidays. If I feel a bit better.
Tonight though, going to play some of my game and watch some Downton Abbey, Dr Who, and the Fades.

I'm working on a legal document for a labor case that will be filed in early 2014. I take breaks, and check in on DU, and play with the dogs. Then back to work. I'll have a big chunk of it done by morning.
