(32,886 posts)By the time the left unites to fight a 'W' or 'Reagan' or, lets get even more to the point, a Mussolini or a Hitler, they have usually failed to unite to do so at least once at the ballot box and then you are relegated to sniping from the sidelines if at all.
I'm sure the German Communist Party and the German Social Democrats each felt they had important ideological reasons for not uniting to oppose the Nazis in 1933. The Communists and Social Democrats who continued to oppose the Nazis got plenty of time to think about that in Concentration camps.
Its not quite as serious in the US today, but what 'W' did because we couldnt unite to stop him was still pretty bad.

(18,775 posts)do you think discussions on racism or homophobia are appropriate on DU?
I kind of wonder why discussions of women's rights are often trivialized. If you answered yes to the above, why do you think that discussions about the rights of women are an 'occupation of bandwidth'?

(15,577 posts)and any of the other ills that plague our world are fine if they are a direct result of a political party platform or action. In my opinion. My opinion doesn't run DU of course, but that is my answer to your question.
Discussions of the rights of women, the rights of people of color, of immigrants, of the disabled, of the poor, of ex-convicts, of veterans, of elderly, of children etc etc etc are all well and good. It's just my observation that many (or most) of the discussions that take place here don't involve dialogue on what it will take to move the country to the left or even to the center.
We argue amongst ourselves, it seems to me, on issues that could be best addressed by having a more liberal and compassionate government. Qualities, generally speaking, Republicans do not seem to have. That's all I mean.......

(11,709 posts)Mostly, because it never existed. DU has always been a place to discuss issues across the Democratic spectrum; it has never been an echo chamber for the DNC.
That's where the "underground" in the name comes from.
Dyedinthewoolliberal
(15,577 posts)Saying 'I'm not Republican' doesn't mean I'm echoing the DNC.
