Also, I wonder if the admins keep any records as to which threads get the most "TRASH THREAD" errrrr....'votes' as it were?

I've trashed at least a dozen bullshitty, flame-bait threads in the last day or so. It's getting to the point where it's hard to wade through the latest faked "Outrage du Jour" posts, along with the snarky retort posts, to get to the current events and politics.

It's old schoolers, and their socks and zombies. You'd think they'd get a life--it's probably a bit embarrassing, when they step back and look at what they're up to.

I'm guessing those idiots at that crazy hate site with an entire forum devoted to what happens over here are behind it. They're probably getting their jollies watching who jumps in the crapper and starts swirling around with the shit.

I'm USING that TRASH THREAD button--it makes my holidays bright!

A bunch of antagonistic thread titles, participants looking for a fight, folks reading more into what some one says, or conflating things, taking other statements to extremes.

I've stayed out of it, not worth it.

Maybe its the holiday season.

So lacking a better choice (like "All participants&quot , I blame Santa.

Gender Enlightenment to be found amongst DU Males.

No honest DUer is arguing that untoward behavior should be allowed or accepted. Plenty though push back against being lumped in with men who DO engage in behavior women abhor.

Witness the thread titled "I am a man." Chock full of shut the fuck up and poured over our heads like so much rhetorical boiling oil. Not the slightest hint of "present company excepted".

I submit that DU Men get short shrift in these broad-brush discussions.

Dec 2013

There isn't really much "gender enlightenment" among DU males, no. There's a lot of justification of creepy behaviour and a general dismissiveness that the lived experience and concerns of women about issues that relate to their everyday lives are irrelevant; there've been comments like "don't go out if you don't want to be looked at!", suggestions that women shouldn't get to decide what constitutes inappropriate behaviour from men, and much else besides. You know, if you don't do that? Then they're not talking about you. So you can just shut up and stay out of it instead of defending creepy behaviour or dismissing the issue out of hand as one that's irrelevant or acting put-upon and blaming "divisveness" on "shit-stirring feminists" instead of your own responses to legitimate women's issues.

I'm neither the most progressive nor enlightened DUer. I am, however, the father of two daughters. This keeps me focused on seeing that we remove society's roadblocks to their success.

"Present company excepted" can be a funny thing at DU. I had to self delete a post about two months ago indicating that my experience was that white, non-urban Americans between 40-80 have an overwhelming propensity to become raving wingnuts. I based this on my observations of coworkers, family, high school classmates, and upper Midwesterners. Naturally, every rural, white DUer thought I was talking about them. I thought it was obvious that if you are a DUer, you aren't my target, but I was wrong. Generally, we are pretty hard on one another; we should be saving the anger for conservatives outside of DU.

Basically it is men who can't handle feminism and don't like sinking to equality with women rather than having the upper hand.

They usually sink to "sorry, it's evolutionary science, we're supposed to be in charge, deal with it." Problem is the feminists refuse to obey, so that's why it gets so testy.

There are jerk religious people. There are jerk atheists. There are jerk men. There are jerk women. There are jerk rich people. There are jerk poor people. We should never stereotype an entire group based on the jerks. Because just as there are jerks in every category of people, there are also good people in every category of people as well. I agree with you. I see men and children and women as people.
