Lets talk Cruises!

I am planning on taking my first cruise middle of febuary. just went and got my passport application going.

Where would one start from scratch to book a cruise? Anyone have any recommendations on which to use or which to avoid? Recommend a travel agent? do it yourself?

I am single, live in DC would like to fly to florida and catch a cruise down there somewhere and go to a beach. somewhere warm. for about a week- 10 days. Lots of single women around would be a plus 8-)

So where might one go to begin the process?

both with Princess ships. I found a travel agency that is connected to United, I think it is called United Cruises. They seem to have good prices, but keep checking for promotions. I also got 8 mile per dollar spent on my mileage club. It would certainly be worth checking out. My agent was Julie Collins and she was very helpful.

I plan all of my trips online. I definitely recommend flying out to your port at least a day ahead of time and then maybe spend the rest of your vacation in Florida at the end of your cruise. You want to make sure that you make it to your ship. The most important thing to remember when in port - don't miss the ship. You can go onto youtube and look for videos of people running to catch the ship that is already sailing away from the dock.

I would recommend looking at the website cruisecritic.com. You can find a lot of useful information on the community pages about all things cruising. A lot of people will post reviews when they get back. A lot of cruises will have a roll call where you might be able to make contact with people who will be on the same cruise as the one you book.

I like cruising out of Florida and have cruised out of Miami several times and Ft. Lauderdale once. I wish that I had spent more time in Ft. Lauderdale as there is a water taxi that you can get a day pass and get around easily. Ft. Lauderdale was really interesting on the port departure. We actually had a couple of small naval gun boats escort us out and they wouldn't let any other ships get close to our ship.

I like Miami as well and took the little harbor cruise where you go by a lot of the homes of the rich and famous.

I have cruised on Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. The only line I was not that thrilled with was Norwegian. I am personally not that interested in sailing on any of the super jumbo size ships because I think that they are probably adding a lot more pay venues (restaurants and so on) and they are just too crowded. I liked Freedom of the Sea (Royal Caribbean), Miracle (Carnival) and Valor (Carnival - with a great adult area). I like the comedy clubs that Carnival has on their ships now.

As to what type of cruise to pick - it depends upon your interests. Do you want more island stops or more sea days. What type of activities are you interested in? Sea days have grown on me but I love doing water activities. I have gone swimming with the stingrays in Grand Caymans and Antigua, swimming with manatees and dolphins in Couzumel, snuba in St. Thomas and St. Lucia, snorkeling ( in St. Thomas, Barbados, Roatan, Grand Cayman, Belize, Antigua, Curacao, Dominica and St. Maarten) and, zip lining in Jamaica and St. Kitts and even went parasailing in St. Thomas.

My favorite places are Belize (the water is fabulous), Curacao (great beaches and a capitol to explore), St Thomas (great beaches and the snuba was too die for), Dominica (very different, only 4% flat, did a great river tubing excursion there), Cozumel (I always wanted to swim with manatees and I booked this excursion on my own).

I would recommend reading the book Caribbean by James Michener to get in the spirit of visiting the Caribbean.

but I am a relatively frequent traveler to Florida and the beaches and I see the cruise ships take anchor in Fort Lauderdale, and Key West.
HONESTLY
if you are under 50, it's not your best way to meet single women traveling.
I see more over 70 folks than any other, and many many many in wheelchairs coming off those ships when they spend a bit of time in port.
Be vigilant, and ask. I don't want you to think it's the ideal way to meet someone.
But then there are always the exceptions, I was just led to tell you to beware.

You'll waste so many days on the boat and many times you'll only get a few hours on the island before it's time to board the boat again

I would rather hang on the beach than on the boat. In my experience it is cheaper, but it depends on where you go.

Norweigan was really nice, even for cheapo inside cabin with a porthole. Food was top notch.

Carnival was like a floating walmart. Food was awful. It was really a waste, despite having a cheapo balcony room

you book online through them. Right down from cruise ship to airport and travel to and from port.

Western Caribbean is the best route. Freedom of the Seas is one mighty fine ship. 7 day activity filled fun in the sun.

if you want a smaller trip, do Royal Caribbean Bahamas route Majesty of the Seas is also a beautiful ship.

Spend the money to get a deck right outside your cabin. WELL worth it especially if you are angling for a little romance.

Cruises are a LOT of fun and excitement. The food you get durning night time dining experience is first class all way
Besides the wonderful on board things to do. Shopping with no "duty" and scenery surroundings

In our travel group you would probably find some good suggestions: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1216

I have only gone on Royal Caribbean and it was nice. The area down by Cozumel - they call it the Mayan Riveria - is beautiful. The islands off Belize are gorgeous and the water is stunning turquoise. Many folks dive/scuba down there because it's so beautiful. I stayed on Ambergris Caye and didn't wear shoes for the entire vacation. Have fun!

www.cruisecritic.com.

There you will find lots of great info. Not only that, you will find a forum set up for your specific cruise where you can ask other passengers who are veterans of cruising questions.
This will also provide some friendly people who will probably get together on the cruise.

lots of great reviews and discussion forums.

Not sure about whether or not there are such a thing as "singles cruises", but there could very well be a discussion thread or two.

We've only taken one cruise which was a 7 day Southern Carribean on Princess. We did go with a group of friends and family so my experience would be different. However I would day that for the most part it was a lot of fun. But as others have said, you usually only have a few hours on shore of the ports of call.

If you do decide on the cruise, you can book it directly with Princess. They are a very good customer service friendly cruise line and you can book your entire trip, airfare and all, directly with them. What I would suggest is after you do book, keep looking at the criuse you picked because sometimes they will reduce the price without telling you, but if you do find that they did reduce the price, Princess will honor the price reduction.

Next year, we're doind the all inclusive in Punta Cana. This should be more fun.
