Just got a notification from ebay…my ebay account has been hacked.

Cousin dying, account getting hacked, business opening…I just flopped down on the floor laughing at the absurdity of it all.

So I opened a bottle of wine and lit a fire in the fireplace. I've done whatever I could to protect myself.

Oy, what a 24 hours I've had

The fault is with the banks that don't have a strong encryption system for CC transactions. The CC numbers should only be sent in strong encryption from the POS terminal to the bank. The storage of CC numbers unencrypted is the problem. Europe has made CC use much stronger system to protect the merchant, bank and customer.

Which it's not, it's a completely separate issue.

At best it's misleading, at worst it's dishonest.

my ebay account, which I've had since 1997 with NO problem, also got hacked.

at all of their stores. Might have been an inside job, or someone just found an opening--but regardless, they most certainly take the bulk of the blame. Better encryption might help keep the card numbers secure when hacking occurs, but Target let their system get hacked in the first place.

There are many phishing emails floating around out there that do not originate with eBay or Paypal. Don't click on any links in that type of email. Don't confirm any personal info.

If you have a question regarding your account, call them on the telephone.

…and "coincidentally" my ebay account got hacked. Ebay/Paypal accounts are linked to the Chase debit card. Is this absolute proof its the same hackers? No, but it makes sense to stay alert, that's all.
