(1,555 posts)Have always loved the soul and passion in his voice - Christmas song or not.
Other favorites are: Please come home for Christmas - The Eagles, Celebrate Me Home - Kenny Loggins, Lord Let the Angels Sing - Johnny Rodgers Band
I'm desperately trying to find some sort of spirit this year but I think it may come next year for me.

(40,416 posts)Singing Mel Torme's "Christmas Song" (He wrote it)
An awesome performance. Not sure who's playing piano here, either Nat or Mel. Mel starts it out and Nat does what the King does. Regardless, it's good shit.
Gotta be near the top.
Merry Christmas DUers!

(45,251 posts)If sung very well, it will give me chills and has been known to wring a tear or two out of me.
I also like We Three Kings. For some reason, the wise men struck a chord (no pun intended) with me as far back as I can recall, though I don't know why. (Maybe because they started the tradition of Christmas gifts?)
Then, I pretty much like all the rest, too.

(9,385 posts)Not really a carol, but certainly a Christmas song.
The Rebel Jesus (Jackson Browne)
All the streets are filled with laughter and light
And the music of the season
And the merchants' windows are all bright
With the faces of the children
And the families hurrying to their homes
As the sky darkens and freezes
Will be gathering around the hearths and tables
Giving thanks for God's graces
And the birth of the rebel Jesus
Well they call him by 'the Prince of Peace'
And they call him by 'the Savior'
And they pray to him upon the seas
And in every bold endeavor
And they fill his churches with their pride and gold
As their faith in him increases
But they've turned the nature that I worship in
From a temple to a robber's den
In the words of the rebel Jesus
Well we guard our world with locks and guns
And we guard our fine possessions
And once a year when Christmas comes
We give to our relations
And perhaps we give a little to the poor
If the generosity should seize us
But if any one of us should interfere
In the business of why there are poor
They get the same as the rebel Jesus
Now pardon me if I have seemed
To take the tone of judgment
For I've no wish to come between
This day and your enjoyment
In a life of hardship and of earthly toil
There's a need for anything that frees us
So I bid you pleasure
And I bid you cheer
From a heathen and a pagan
On the side of the rebel Jesus

(46,179 posts)I like them all; religious, although I'm not a christian, secular, pagan, sacred, silly, and profane.
There is no single ANYTHING that is "best," "most," or "favorite." As far as holiday music goes, they aren't competing with each other; they all have something to add.

(331 posts)It's not technically a Christmas song, but I doubt if any captures more perfectly the meaning of this season. It is a hymn that is fairly specific to my church, so I doubt many have heard it. I'll post the lyrics below, sorry for the length, but it really is a beautiful song.
1. A poor, wayfaring Man of grief
Hath often crossed me on my way,
Who sued so humbly for relief
That I could never answer nay.
I had not powr to ask his name,
Whereto he went, or whence he came;
Yet there was something in his eye
That won my love; I knew not why.
2. Once, when my scanty meal was spread,
He entered; not a word he spake,
Just perishing for want of bread.
I gave him all; he blessed it, brake,
And ate, but gave me part again.
Mine was an angels ptortion then,
For while I fed with eager haste,
The crust was manna to my taste.
3. I spied him where a fountain burst
Clear from the rock; his strength was gone.
The heedless water mocked his thirst;
He heard it, saw it hurrying on.
I ran and raised the suffrer up;
Thrice from the stream he drained my cup,
Dipped and returned it running oer;
I drank and never thirsted more.
4. Twas night; the floods were out; it blew
A winter hurricane aloof.
I heard his voice abroad and flew
To bid him welcome to my roof.
I warmed and clothed and cheered my guest
And laid him on my couch to rest,
Then made the earth my bed and seemed
In Edens garden while I dreamed.
5. Stript, wounded, beaten nigh to death,
I found him by the highway side.
I roused his pulse, brought back his breath,
Revived his spirit, and supplied
Wine, oil, refreshmenthe was healed.
I had myself a wound concealed,
But from that hour forgot the smart,
And peace bound up my broken heart.
6. In prisn I saw him next, condemned
To meet a traitors doom at morn.
The tide of lying tongues I stemmed,
And honored him mid shame and scorn.
My friendships utmost zeal to try,
He asked if I for him would die.
The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill,
But my free spirit cried, I will!
7. Then in a moment to my view
The stranger started from disguise.
The tokens in his hands I knew;
The Savior stood before mine eyes.
He spake, and my poor name he named,
Of me thou hast not been ashamed.
These deeds shall thy memorial be;
Fear not, thou didst them unto me.
