The R primary system was heavily influenced by Pat Robertson in the 80s. He organized social conservatives under religion and targeted the Iowa. Now Iowa is worthless as an indicator of a candidates popularity Its possible that when Pat ran for President in the 80s he was putting proof to the exact number of people who would deliver votes for him. That's why the early races mean nothing; they've become dominated by the extremists of a well-organized movement.
