Why is anyone shocked that the bible is homophobic?

For the reasons you mention. It's to be expected.

And some people still are *glad* it's homophobic. Confirms and supports their own personal prejudice.

In the same way that apologists for rape, genocide and slavery have found solace and support there over the centuries.
