Facebook rants don’t pay.

Facebook can get you in a lot of trouble, whether your settings are private or not. One New York City area police officer who is now on administrative leave for his activities there is learning that the hard way. Officer Peter Burns of Pleasantville is accused of posting a racist, threatening rant about President Barack Obama on his Facebook page under the name “Coon Trapper.” Burns allegedly wrote:

The fact that he (Obama) is still alive bewilders me. Go die in a shallow grave you Muslim commie.

Now, personally, I think words like that should earn the good officer a visit from the Secret Service. He did, after all, tell the President to “go die.” But, at the very least, it should cost him his badge. For now, though, he is on administrative leave and relieved of his duties, pending an Internal Affairs investigation, according to Police Chief Richard Love. The Facebook page, while set to private, was obtained by a reporter for The Journal News and shown to Love on Monday. It has not been revealed how the reporter got access to the page. Love says that his department does not currently have a policy on social media. However, this incident could spark a change. He called Burns’ alleged comments “despicable,” “totally unacceptable” and said that they “will not be tolerated.”
