Flashback 2008: With gas prices approaching $5, SoCA drivers head to Mexico for $2.50 gas

GWB thought of a wonderful solution - create a huge recession! Nothing like the entire economy crashing off the cliff to bring down gas prices....

SANTEE, Calif. -- As gasoline prices rise ever higher, some drivers have discovered an alternative to runaway fuel inflation in the U.S.: subsidized gas just minutes away in Mexico.

Gasoline is selling for six pesos per liter across the border in Tijuana, which works out to about $2.50 a gallon, way cheaper than gas prices approaching $5 a gallon in San Diego County. Diesel fuel is cheaper still -- $2.19 a gallon.

And pack the Jeep full. That would save over a dollar a gallon.

What border crossing are they using? I've only crossed over into Mexico a couple of times by car and it was several years ago but it was usually one hell of a lot more than minutes away, closer to hours away IIRC. Follow the border wait by lineups at gas stations and then even longer border waits getting home.

I'd need a slip tank in the back of a truck to make it worth the time and money.

In my experience, the average wait in line at San Ysidro is at least an hour, and you don't save any time by going to Otay Mesa.
