PolicyMic: It's Not About Gay Rights — Here's the Real Reason Obama Isn't Going to Sochi

Back in the August of 2008, a five-day war broke out between Russia and Republic of Georgia, a former Soviet state. The fight was over another break-away republic torn between Russia and Georgia, South Ossetia.

The reason for the war’s outbreak isn’t relevant and doesn’t explain the Obama administration’s Sochi decision, but the fallout from the war absolutely might.

When Russian tanks rolled into Abkhazia en route to sovereign Georgian territory, the Georgian armed forces left their posts all along the Georgian border and massed near Ossetia in preparation to repel a potential Russian invasion.

Put simply, for five days in August of 2008, Georgia left its broad borders relatively unguarded.

John McCain's presidential campaign, but when the Georgians failed to beat the Russians the GOP left it. The Plan was to give McCain the credit as a brilliant strategerist (like GW Bush was), but it didn't work out. McCain was visiting Georgia in the run-up but left just before hostilities broke out.
