Russia Claims Right To Deploy Missiles Anywhere On Its Territory

MOSCOW, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Russia had the right to deploy its missiles anywhere within its territory, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday, in a response to Western concerns over its deployment of state-of-the-art missiles near NATO's eastern borders.

"Recently a big fuss started that we've planted our (tactical missiles) Iskanders in a wrong place," he told a meeting with students in a Moscow institute.

"We may plant them wherever we want on the Russian territory," the Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.

Russia said Monday that it has deployed its tactical Iskander-M missiles along the borders with NATO countries, and insisted that the deployment did not violate international treaties.

On the same day, the United States voiced its concerns to Russia over the missile deployment in its western Kaliningrad region and urged Moscow not to undertake "destabilizing steps."

Russian is claming the Arctic, does this mean they can put missiles next to Canada and Alaska?

just their side. Anyway - the UN decides who gets what. Aside from that Canada isn't building a missile system which is 30 minutes drive from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

3. 'Nuclear train' returns: Russia to deploy rail-based missiles to counter US 'Prompt Global Strike'

Dec 2013

Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces are preparing to revive railroad-based missiles and counter the US’s Conventional Prompt Global Strike concept. A blueprint of the modernized “nuclear train” will be presented in the first half of 2014.

“A Defense Ministry report has been submitted to the president and the order has been given to develop a preliminary design of a rail-mounted missile system,” the commander of the Strategic Missile Force, Lt. Gen. Sergey Karakayev, said Wednesday, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

General Karakayev compared a potential power of a “nuclear train” with several missiles to a division of stationery silo-based intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“Our missile officers are frustrated that we don’t possess such a system today,” Karakayev said Wednesday. “When the Supreme Commander-in-Chief [President Vladimir Putin] asked me about it, I expressed full support in the railroad-based missile systems.”

Russia used to possess the intercontinental ballistic missile system RT-24 Yars (NATO designation: SS-24 Scalpel) disguised as an ordinary freight train, inherited from the Soviet Union. With Russia’s extremely vast railroad system, detection and preemptive destruction of that system was extremely difficult.

Sometimes the grass just looks greener on the other side.

In the current case with the Ukraine whilst I can understand the desire of some to go with the EU they lack a model which would make economic sense. Best result they are likely to get is a triple agreement between themselves , the EU and Russia.

MOSCOW, December 19 (RIA Novosti) – President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia has not deployed Iskander tactical nuclear missiles in Kaliningrad, an exclave wedged between NATO members Lithuania and Poland.

“We have made no such decision,” Putin said at a marathon annual press conference.

It was claimed in media reports over the weekend that Iskander nuclear-capable missiles had been identified by satellite photos in Kaliningrad.

“We have said many times that the missile shield threatens our nuclear potential, and so we must respond. One possible response would be to station Iskanders in Kaliningrad,” Putin said.

The Bush White House revives the Strategic Defense Initiative -- the Russians introduce a new missile with the capability of evading anti-missile defenses.

The US wants to introduce a new, hypersonic cruise missile with the capability of striking anywhere in the world in less than an hour -- the Russians counter with rail-mounted missiles right out of the Cold War.

Did any of the 'Think Tank' geniuses consider that the Russians might not know if the missile heading their way has a nuclear or conventional warhead? Did they consider that the Russkies might respond with nukes?

Helloooooo? Is anybody out there thinking?
