One of the most important points in Sandra Fluke's recent CNN editorial . . .

. . .and one that I've not yet heard corrected by anyone in the media - even Diane Rehm on NPR - is in regards to conservative's claim that women want "other people" or "taxpayers" to pay for women's contraception. That is NOT TRUE. The public is being LIED to by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and others in the Republican Party and their media mouthpieces (as per usual). HERE are the FACTS as stated by Ms. Fluke:

>>>"... despite the misinformation being spread, the regulation under discussion has absolutely nothing to do with government funding: It is all about the insurance policies provided by private employers and universities that are financed by individual workers, students and their families -- not taxpayers."<<<

Here's the relevant bit:

"financed by individual workers, students and their families -- not taxpayers."

1. Hormonal treatment

I'd like to know who believes hormonal treatment that corrects a medical problem is a religious issue. A side effect is that you can't get pregnant while on said medical treatment, but it's still a medical treatment.

It's ridiculous how this has been framed.

Hormonal treatment is used in men. Hormonal treatment is used in women. It's no one's business under HIPAA laws why such treatments are being given, unless men would like to announce that they can't get it up, have man boobs (or their sons have man boobs), and that they are sterile.

"Birth control" is being framed as just that - a contraceptive, when many times, women who take it have no intentions of having sex because they have issues that FAR outweigh wanting to pleasure some idiot. It's more of the "women are DESPERATE to have sex with males" propaganda by the right wing. Uh, if women have cramps so bad that they are barely functional 5 days out of the week, I assure you, the last thing they want is you to stick ANYTHING anywhere near them.

...as simply "contraception" (allegedly just so someone can have sex) - when often, having sex has not a thing to do with it. "hormonal treatment" is a more accurate term for the many medical needs "the pill" is used to treat. Heavy bleeding, cramps, acne, prevention of ovarian cysts - none of it has anything to do with having sex. It has to do with being able to function in society and staying healthy and in the case of the cysts - fertile.

It is why I can't seem to understand why the Right could not at all look at that.

They get stuck with the Limbaugh reference of "Having too much sex". Jealous much?

Like many point out, taking such a pill is used for hormone therapy and is not indicative of the amount of action one gets. One must also point out that it is not through tax payer money that this issue is about, rather it is through the insurance policies which are paid for by individuals and companies.

It is why, when I see any one just reference how one gets paid for contaceptives(which should be just hormone based drugs) and just thinks about "sex" which is not the issue at hand, I tend to think that they have no idea what they are talking about and I can safely assume that it is best not to deal with them.

The media isn't doing near enough to educate them though. They are practically letting Rush's lies go unchallenged.

Besides that the man is allowed air time at all, that's my beef with all this. The media certainly knows better. Hell, they can read just as well as anyone else. But they *choose* to let Rush's definitions stand. No one points out the gross inaccuracies and downright lies in what he or any other wingnut is saying.

It's not like the facts are obscure or hard to find. The problem is, the media and and the wingnuts are simply not interested in them. They don't fit in with the "women are less than human and ought to be shamed, oppressed and controlled' paradigm, I guess, so they just make up their own. Pfft.

The media needed to ignore the lie so they could focus on the fight over Rush's bad language.
