He had a cute schtick, he wouldn't be the first one joke comic out there. Can anyone say "take my wife, please". But basically that's what he was.

His act is all about a specific culture (rednecks), just like George Lopez (Latino), Jackie Mason (Jewish), Eddie Griffin (Black), Yakov Smirnoff (Soviets) and Ant (Gay).

I guess being a one joke pony is preferable to someone who can, with ease, be unfunny discussing any topic (Dane Cook, Janeane Garofalo, and Joan Rivers).

I'd probably say he was even more of a one joke than some that you listed. They had/have the basic "character" you describe. But Foxworthy, with out his signature line, would still be working the club circuit. He built an act around it.

Carlin, Skelton, Cosby, Pryor, these guys had a bit more depth and breadth. But they don't come along everyday.

The can add both depth and breadth to the routine and (most importantly) maintain the quality. I don't necessarily mind watching a comedian who focuses on one specific thing, I'm just not usually excited about seeing their show the next time around, since it's just going to be new jokes with the same old theme.

Carlin was less comedian than he was commentator. Closer to Art Buchwald than Buster Keaton. If you really watch Pyror closely, you can almost feel bad laughing. The guy was funny as hell, but in some sense he wasn't "joking".

Santorum has Dave Mustaine and the Duggars, Gingrich has fundie freakwad Chuck Norris, and now Rmoney has Mr. "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader". Keep 'em coming.

before telling the state trooper to kiss her ass... you might be a redneck. This hack has 10,000 variations of the same joke and that's the only one that makes me laugh.

It would be JUST FINE.

Cohen is just not funny, at least to me.
He's an asshole comedian, that is, he acts like an absolute asshole and says "I'm funny! Laugh!"

Foxworthy gives me a good laugh, especially when he's on stage with the rest of the Blue Collar guys.
Yes, including Larry the Cable Guy.

And not funny. But I will admit that over the years, I've noticed that his act is more than just 'you might be a redneck.'

He's not one of the greats, but he's ok. Neither the worst nor the best. He's average.
